{"id":319375,"date":"2025-10-20T20:11:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T20:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/319375\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T20:11:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T20:11:15","slug":"father-sentenced-to-45-years-in-prison-in-connection-with-12-year-old-sons-death-in-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/319375\/","title":{"rendered":"Father sentenced to 45 years in prison in connection with 12-year-old son\u2019s death in 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>BEXAR COUNTY, Texas<\/strong> \u2013 A man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison in connection with the death of his 12-year-old son. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Derrick Coles, 35, had been found guilty in a Bexar County courtroom in August on five of six charges over whether he caused serious bodily injuries to his son, Danilo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/14\/father-convicted-on-5-of-6-charges-in-12-year-old-sons-death-following-years-of-delays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2025\/08\/14\/father-convicted-on-5-of-6-charges-in-12-year-old-sons-death-following-years-of-delays\/\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; Father convicted on 5 of 6 charges in 12-year-old son\u2019s death following years of delays<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">One of Coles\u2019 charges had been waived. However, he was found guilty of the injury to a child charge, which is a first-degree felony. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The sentencing for all counts will run concurrently, totaling 45 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Prosecutors said Coles abused his son, Danilo, so severely that the boy did not survive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Danilo was previously found unresponsive on Feb. 5, 2022, in the couple\u2019s apartment in the 7000 block of Wurzbach Road. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Danilo was beaten and burned by his parents, with injuries covering his body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Bexar County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office ruled his cause of death as rhabdomyolysis \u2014 a breakdown of muscle tissue caused by extreme exertion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">Kapri Cheatom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2022\/02\/07\/couple-charged-in-fatal-beating-of-12-year-old-boy-in-northwest-side-apartment-police-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.ksat.com\/news\/local\/2022\/02\/07\/couple-charged-in-fatal-beating-of-12-year-old-boy-in-northwest-side-apartment-police-say\/\">who is also charged in the case but is being tried separately<\/a>, appeared in court in August for a status hearing on her own charges.
