Let&#8217;s trace back some of its history.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Schaub, The Republic | azcentral.com<\/p>\n<p>As D\u00eda de los Muertos approaches, Arizona grocery stores stock their bakery shelves with traditional pan dulce and sweet breads that help families honor loved ones with flavor and memory.<\/p>\n<p>Conchas, empanadas, pan de huevo and pan de muerto were among variants that could be found at Food City, Ranch Market and El Super locations across the Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at where you can get Mexican sweet bread ahead of D\u00eda de los Muertos on Nov. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Which Arizona grocery stores sell pan dulce for D\u00eda de Muertos?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mifoodcity.com\/product\/500051757\/pan-dulce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food City<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/menu\/cardenas-ranch-markets-phoenix-5\/item\/pan-dulce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ranch Market<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shop.elsupermarkets.com\/store\/el-super\/collections\/3266-bakery-panaderia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">El Super<\/a>, all have pan dulce and other Mexican sweet breads available year-round, including during D\u00eda de los Muertos.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these stores offer self-serve bakeries for shoppers to select their favorite sweet breads.<\/p>\n<p>Some Food City locations have specific checkouts at the bakery for shoppers buying pan dulce.<\/p>\n<p>What kind of pan dulce are available D\u00eda de los Muertos?<\/p>\n<p>Pan dulce sold year round included iconic conchas with their grid-like sugar crust, animal-shaped molasses cookies called puerquitos, also known as cochitos, and seasonal variants, like pumpkin empanadas.<\/p>\n<p>Some bakeries also offer Americanized options, such as chocolate chip conchas or muffin-style sweet breads.<\/p>\n<p>How much is pan dulce at Arizona grocery stores?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mifoodcity.com\/search?q=pan+dulce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Food City<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shop.elsupermarkets.com\/store\/el-super\/products\/19408772-sweet-bread-each\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">El Super<\/a> had pan dulce options most for $0.98 each.<\/p>\n<p>El Super had larger pan de muerto for $3.99 each.<\/p>\n<p>Why is food part of D\u00eda de los Muertos celebrations?<\/p>\n<p>D\u00eda de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mexican holiday that honors and remembers<\/a> loved ones who have passed.<\/p>\n<p>Decorative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/entertainment\/holidays\/2025\/10\/06\/what-is-an-ofrenda-dia-de-los-muertos\/86334351007\/?taid=68f640776617580001bb140d&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ofrendas<\/a> often include the favorite foods of those being remembered.<\/p>\n<p>For many, that included sweet breads like pan dulce.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00eda de los Muertos is all about celebration, remembrance and joy, turning grief into a festival of life.<\/p>\n<p>Arizona Republic reporter Tiffany Acosta contributed to this article.<\/p>\n<p>Rey Covarrubias Jr. reports for The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com.
