{"id":320193,"date":"2025-10-21T03:39:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T03:39:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/320193\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T03:39:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T03:39:15","slug":"national-average-gas-prices-fall-below-3-per-gallon-lowest-since-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/320193\/","title":{"rendered":"National average gas prices fall below $3 per gallon, lowest since 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The average price of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">gasoline<\/a> in the United States has fallen to $2.98, hitting its lowest point since the pandemic-era low <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/gas-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">prices<\/a> of 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The national average gas price sits $0.152 lower than it did one year ago and $0.193 lower than just one month ago, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gasbuddy.com\/go\/national-average-falls-below-3-refinery-outage-in-midwest-may-hike-regional-gas-prices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">GasBuddy analysis<\/a>. This follows the lowest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3789375\/gas-prices-higher-than-expected-labor-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Labor Day<\/a> gas prices recorded since 2020 and falling gas prices heading into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3825893\/gas-prices-falling-heading-into-autumn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">autumn<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGas prices have finally fallen below $3 per gallon nationally \u2014 the earliest date we\u2019ve seen a $2.99 national average since 2020, when COVID was the primary driver of low prices,\u201d Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement. \u201cCurrently, 35 states have average gas prices below $2.99\/gal.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>De Haan said that Americans largely have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/opec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">OPEC<\/a>+ to thank for the decline in prices as they have \u201csteadily raised oil production for much of 2025.\u201d OPEC+ has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/energy-and-environment\/3401176\/oil-prices-plunge-opec-boosts-output\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">taken steps<\/a> throughout 2025 to accelerate oil production. Most recently, eight countries agreed in early October to boost production by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opec.org\/pr-detail\/578-05-october-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">137,000 barrels<\/a> a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarring any major disruptions, gas prices are likely to remain slightly below year-ago levels and could stay under $3 for much of the next few months,\u201d De Haan said.<\/p>\n<p>White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt touted the price drop as part of \u201cthe Trump effect\u201d in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PressSec\/status\/1980295508649525757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">post on X<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Energy Information Administration last recorded the national gas price average just above $3.00 per gallon, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/gasdiesel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">$3.061<\/a> on Oct. 13. GasBuddy\u2019s analysis is from over 12 million individual price reports recorded at 150,000 gas stations across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The states with the lowest average gas prices are Oklahoma, at $2.45; Texas, at $2.54; and Arkansas, at $2.55, according to the analysis. The bottom 10% of stations in the country by price sit at an average of $2.37 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p>California, Hawaii, and Washington are the states with the highest average gas prices per gallon, according to the analysis. California sits at $4.60 per gallon, Hawaii at $4.45, and Washington at $4.36. The top 10% of stations with the highest gas prices sit at an average $4.45 per gallon.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/3849357\/conocophillips-warns-crude-oil-supply-plateauing-low-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">CONOCOPHILLIPS WARNS OF US CRUDE OIL SUPPLY PLATEAUING BECAUSE OF LOW PRICES<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/petroleum\/gasdiesel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Energy Information Administration<\/a>, California had a regular gas price average of $4.457 per gallon on Oct. 13, which was $0.029 higher than what it was one year ago.
