Daley ever did\u2019 \u2014 20 years later<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n 1864:<\/strong> Chicago City Council passed an ordinance<\/a> that converted a 60-acre tract at the north end of City Cemetery into Lake Park.<\/p>\n 1946:<\/strong> Navy Pier<\/a> opened the Chicago branch of the University of Illinois to accommodate World War II veterans<\/a> returning to college on the GI Bill.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: How \u2018Circle campus\u2019 became UIC<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Almost 20 years later, the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle campus opened. Its name came from its location \u2014 at the circular junction of what became the Kennedy, Eisenhower and Dan Ryan expressways.<\/p>\n 1976:<\/strong> Novelist and University of Chicago professor Saul Bellow<\/a> won the Nobel Prize<\/a> for literature.<\/p>\n Vintage Chicago Tribune: Nobel Prize winners with Chicago connections<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Bellow became the seventh American to win a Nobel Prize in 1976 and the seventh American to win the literature category.
