(Chicago Tribune historical photo)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1946:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-u-of-i-campus-on-navy\/166054918\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Navy Pier<\/a> opened the Chicago branch of the University of Illinois to <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-gi-bill-praised-in-dedic\/166055103\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accommodate World War II veterans<\/a> returning to college on the GI Bill.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"zmn5dZDmzk\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/02\/20\/vintage-chicago-tribune-how-circle-campus-became-uic\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: How \u2018Circle campus\u2019 became UIC<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Almost 20 years later, the University of Illinois at Chicago Circle campus opened. (George Quinn\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1976:<\/strong> Novelist and University of Chicago professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/12\/07\/vintage-chicago-tribune-nobel-prize-winners-with-chicago-connections\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Saul Bellow<\/a> won the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-saul-bellow-wins-nobel-p\/183353696\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nobel Prize<\/a> for literature.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"kwYJFIX5W0\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/12\/07\/vintage-chicago-tribune-nobel-prize-winners-with-chicago-connections\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: Nobel Prize winners with Chicago connections<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Bellow became the seventh American to win a Nobel Prize in 1976 and the seventh American to win the literature category. He was frazzled the morning of the announcement, but the reason had nothing to do with the award \u2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/383970720\/?terms=%22saul%20bellow%22%20nobel&amp;match=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/image\/383970720\/?terms=%22saul%20bellow%22%20nobel&amp;match=1\">he was moving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what the award meant to him, Bellow responded: \u201cIt means I can stop thinking about recognition. (Ed Wagner\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1985: <\/strong>\u201cThe Bears thrilled the nation with their P-formation,\u201d Tribune reporter Don Pierson wrote.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"8fHKLesj5f\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/09\/18\/chicago-bears-1985-10-memorable-moments\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vintage Chicago Tribune: 10 memorable moments from the 1985 Bears<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Defensive tackle <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-william-the-refrigerato\/183350089\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">William Perry<\/a> became an overnight sensation.
