{"id":320819,"date":"2025-10-21T09:32:11","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T09:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/320819\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T09:32:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T09:32:11","slug":"china-responds-to-u-s-australia-critical-minerals-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/320819\/","title":{"rendered":"China responds to U.S.-Australia critical minerals deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FILE PHOTO: Workers transporting soil containing rare earth elements for export at a port in Lianyungang, Jiangsu province, China, Oct. 31, 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Stringer | Reuters<\/p>\n<p>China on Tuesday responded to the U.S.-Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/20\/trump-australia-albanese-minerals-rare-earths-china.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical minerals deal<\/a> by saying resource-rich rare earth countries should take &#8220;a proactive role&#8221; in stabilizing their critical minerals supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for China&#8217;s Ministry of Foreign Affairs was asked about the U.S. and Australia critical minerals deal which has been framed as an effort to counter Beijing&#8217;s dominance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The formation of global production and supply chains is the result of market and corporate choices,&#8221; Guo Jiakun said, according to NBC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Resource-rich nations with critical minerals should play a proactive role in safeguarding the security and stability of the industrial and supply chains, and ensure normal economic and trade cooperation,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Rare earths are a category of minerals that are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/17\/china-rare-earths-curbs-hit-europe-businesses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">critical<\/a> for a swath of products from cars to semiconductors.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/20\/trump-australia-albanese-minerals-rare-earths-china.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an agreement<\/a> at the White House intended to boost the supplies of rare earths and other critical minerals.<\/p>\n<p>The framework agreement, which was described as an $8.5 billion deal between the allies, comes shortly after China imposed more stringent export controls on rare earths.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s Commerce Ministry earlier this month announced expanded curbs on the export of rare earths and related technologies, seeking to prevent the &#8220;misuse&#8221; of minerals in the military and other sensitive sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Western automotive industry groups have been among those to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/15\/auto-industry-raises-the-alarm-as-china-tightens-rare-earth-curbs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raise the alarm<\/a> over the new export controls, saying the measures could pave the way to a period of supply chain chaos.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese (L) and U.S. President Donald Trump shake hands after signing a $8.5 billion rare earth minerals agreement during a bilateral meeting in the Cabinet Room of the White House on Oct. 20, 2025 in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n<p>Anna Moneymaker | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Demand for rare earths and critical minerals is expected to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/topics\/critical-minerals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grow exponentially<\/a>\u00a0in the coming years as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/12\/13\/countries-agree-to-deal-at-cop28-climate-summit.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clean energy transition picks up pace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>China is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/14\/minerals-us-ukraine-resources-deal-may-be-a-sign-of-things-to-come.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undisputed leader<\/a>\u00a0of the critical minerals supply chain,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bakerinstitute.org\/research\/chinese-behemoths-what-chinas-rare-earths-dominance-means-us#_edn3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounting<\/a>\u00a0for roughly 60% of the world&#8217;s production of rare earth minerals and materials.
