{"id":321001,"date":"2025-10-21T11:08:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:08:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/321001\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T11:08:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:08:09","slug":"alabama-born-co-founder-of-wikipedia-has-a-new-book-coming-out-this-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/321001\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama-born co-founder of Wikipedia has a new book coming out this month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CDYRMWELURGSJBD4WP2BHPK2BQ\">The founder of Wikipedia, Huntsville\u2019s Jimmy Wales, has a book coming out later this month that he hopes will provide lessons on civility for America\u2019s increasingly partisan atmosophere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"63DL5ZLG6NATXMJLCEMOUD7QZM\">\u201cThe Seven Rules of Trust: A Blueprint for Building Things That Last\u201d is due in bookstores Oct. 27. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N4BHOTDIP5B3ROGJ4GEKZB5LHM\">The book is billed as \u201ca sweeping reflection on the global crisis of credibility and knowledge, revealing \u2018the rules of trust\u2019 that transformed Wikipedia from a scrappy experiment into a global utility used by billions of people\u2014and how those rules can help others build things that last.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CFSHXU5QEVAHFPU3QRHYAX4U2M\">Wales, a graduate of Auburn University and the University of Alabama, founded Wikipedia in 2001 with Larry Sanger as an online encyclopedia operating as a non-profit with thousands of anonymous creators and fact-checkers. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZVQERZVDUFGJBBY5RBHB2GA3OA\">He spoke about his journey with the website during a 2016 visit to Alabama <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/anniston-gadsden\/2016\/11\/wikipedias_jimmy_wales_says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/news\/anniston-gadsden\/2016\/11\/wikipedias_jimmy_wales_says.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/business\/2016\/11\/wikipedias_jimmy_wales_talks_a.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/business\/2016\/11\/wikipedias_jimmy_wales_talks_a.html\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"V2JKL3XF2VD4TP6GHJ4AJL6KUA\">Every month people view Wikipedia 11 billion times\u2014just in the English language. However, to do that, the site stresses the need for civility and honesty. As Wales says, he doesn\u2019t run the site, it runs him. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RXB2LAQP3ZFCHJN7D3VNACQGFM\">In an interview with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/18\/magazine\/jimmy-wales-interview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/10\/18\/magazine\/jimmy-wales-interview.html\"> The New York Times<\/a>, Wales responded to criticism &#8211; some of it from Sanger, some from billionaire Elon Musk &#8211; that Wikipedia is a repository for left-wing talking points. He also said the atmosphere in the media and online <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZLIANWOI6FF4LHVM4EEHTHC77A\">\u201cIn day-to-day life, people still do trust each other,\u201d Wales said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QKS3ZL7J6VACRHNCEKPP3LCWKA\">\u201cPeople generally think most people are basically nice and we\u2019re all human beings bumping along on the planet trying to do our best.
