{"id":321039,"date":"2025-10-21T11:29:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/321039\/"},"modified":"2025-10-21T11:29:18","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T11:29:18","slug":"microplastics-may-be-tied-to-vascular-dementia-cases-review-finds-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/321039\/","title":{"rendered":"Microplastics May Be Tied to Vascular Dementia Cases, Review Finds : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/vascular-dementia\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20378793\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vascular dementia<\/a> is caused by blood flow issues in the brain: it&#8217;s one of the most common types of dementia, but not as well researched or understood as others.<\/p>\n<p>Neuropathologist Elaine Bearer from the University of New Mexico is trying to change that.<\/p>\n<p>In a recent review, she has suggested new categorizations for vascular dementia, each with unique <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pathology\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pathologies<\/a> \u2013 the actual biological changes in tissues and organs.<\/p>\n<p>She highlights some significant overlap with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alzheimer&#8217;s disease<\/a>, and she says her team&#8217;s novel <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1101\/2024.11.26.625277\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">microscopy method<\/a> sheds light on how microplastics that have seeped into the body could be triggering or exacerbating cases of vascular dementia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/your-blood-type-affects-your-risk-of-an-early-stroke-study-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Your Blood Type Affects Your Risk of an Early Stroke, Study Reveals<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have been flying blind,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/hscnews.unm.edu\/news\/vascular-disease-is-an-overlooked-contributor-to-dementia-unm-researcher-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Bearer. &#8220;The various vascular pathologies have not been comprehensively defined, so we haven&#8217;t known what we&#8217;re treating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And we didn&#8217;t know that nano- and microplastics were in the picture, because we couldn&#8217;t see them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BloodVessels.jpg\" alt=\"Blood vessel analysis\" width=\"642\" height=\"411\" class=\"wp-image-177516 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>The study looked at how vascular processes can lead to brain injuries. Pathol., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>By analyzing both her own microscope work (<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1101\/2024.11.26.625277\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which is published in a preprint<\/a>) and studies by other researchers, Bearer has categorized the results of chemical staining on the cerebral blood vessels of people who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/most-dementia-patients-return-before-death-and-its-unclear-why\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">died with dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Through that analysis, several different disease processes were identified, all potentially contributing to vascular dementia. These included the thickening of arteries and small amounts of bleeding, as well as tiny strokes that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimers-disease-harms-the-brain-in-2-distinct-phases-study-reveals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">harm neurons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The classifications are intended to be used in future studies of dementia, to explore how blood vessel damage may relate to disease. Every time we understand a condition more fully, that new knowledge can help in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/world-alzheimers-day-heres-how-far-weve-come-in-search-of-a-cure\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">development of treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BloodAnalysis.jpg\" alt=\"Blood vessel under a microscope\" width=\"642\" height=\"546\" class=\"wp-image-177518 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A blood vessel in the brain&#8217;s subcortical white matter, with turquoise dots showing plastic particles. (UNM Health)<\/p>\n<p>That extends to  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"177513\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a> too, the study found. Some of the identified pathologies in vascular dementia overlap with Alzheimer&#8217;s, such as the presence of abnormal amyloid beta proteins. Further investigation into the relationship between both diseases could give insight into how different forms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/something-in-your-pee-could-predict-your-risk-of-one-kind-of-dementia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dementia get started<\/a> and progress.<\/p>\n<p>Tiny plastic fragments, which are everywhere in the environment, also seem to be getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/microplastics-are-infiltrating-your-brain-what-are-the-effects\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">into the brain<\/a>. While it&#8217;s not yet clear what the health impacts are, these pollutants could contribute to or be a product of damage or disease.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nanoplastics in the brain represent a new player on the field of brain pathology,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/hscnews.unm.edu\/news\/vascular-disease-is-an-overlooked-contributor-to-dementia-unm-researcher-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> Bearer. &#8220;All our current thinking about Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and other dementias needs to be revised in light of this discovery.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1101\/2024.11.26.625277\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">I&#8217;m finding<\/a> is that there&#8217;s a lot more plastics in [people with dementia] than in normal subjects. It seems to correlate with the degree and type of dementia.&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/spark-into-space-comp?utm_source=promo_astro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Mid-Article-Promo-Astro-642x272.jpg\" alt=\"Mid Article Promo Astro\" width=\"642\" height=\"272\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-177074 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve actually known about vascular dementia since <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Binswanger%27s_disease#History\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the late 19th century<\/a>, but as other forms of the condition have been easier to identify, diagnose, and track, a lot of research has been directed elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Now there&#8217;s a new framework through which to approach different forms of dementia.
