clearcutting process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VFQAU65QUFGO5HUXFJY53S6P6I\">This quicker and more condensed clearing will<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/michigansbest\/2025\/04\/snapped-tree-tops-bring-a-spring-buffet-for-michigan-elk-herds-in-northern-michigan.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/michigansbest\/2025\/04\/snapped-tree-tops-bring-a-spring-buffet-for-michigan-elk-herds-in-northern-michigan.html\"> benefit elk and deer who feed on aspens<\/a> in the 30-square-mile area, according to DNR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KOQBXWOM3VEKZFWCVXS2LL6D2E\">The spring ice storm brought down nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2025\/04\/never-seen-anything-quite-like-this-nearly-1m-acres-of-michigan-state-forest-damaged-by-ice-storm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2025\/04\/never-seen-anything-quite-like-this-nearly-1m-acres-of-michigan-state-forest-damaged-by-ice-storm.html\">1 million acres of state forest land<\/a>, particularly impacting elk country Up North.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4GXZEKHG6RAYFJ5JNMUBGPQSQ4\">\u201cAspen is a critical food source for elk,\u201d said Shelby Adams, DNR wildlife biologist for the Pigeon River Country. \u201cThis area is the heart of elk range, and we want to find ways for both the elk and forest to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HE332RHUGJDMHODCV3HMY26DCQ\">Clearcuts originally planned over the next 10 years will be grouped into a shorter time frame to better support forest regeneration and elk habitat, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2025\/05\/michigan-elk-herd-to-benefit-from-prescribed-burn-dnr-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/2025\/05\/michigan-elk-herd-to-benefit-from-prescribed-burn-dnr-says.html\">DNR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K6ZVJMANCRB57EW6JFKHUUOA24\">The clearcutting work was originally planned to start in 2028, but the ice storm moved the timeline forward because timber salvage work needs to be done in that area in the next one to two years, according to the DNR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6WUBLSMJOJCULMQXNHC56OHOZA\">Aerial assessments from the DNR brought back stark imagery of red pine plantations in Pigeon River Country State Forest decimated down to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/weather\/2025\/04\/tree-tops-snapped-from-ice-storm-leave-behind-stick-like-forest-north-of-gaylord.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/weather\/2025\/04\/tree-tops-snapped-from-ice-storm-leave-behind-stick-like-forest-north-of-gaylord.html\">forest of sticks <\/a>after tree tops heavy with ice snapped off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7MDWEY3L7JF2FJGPV6J6ZKQSE4\"><b>Hear Michigan\u2019s elk: <\/b><a undeveloped land and is home to the majority of the 1,150 wild elk that roam across Cheboygan, Otsego and Montmorency Counties.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EKUWN3G6PZGY3NNQFH5ORXBVDY\">The accelerated cutting schedule will take place in nine subunits, within the two state forest management units in Montmorency and Otsego counties. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VDKW26GPCNHH5OMYB46RIVD4UM\">The clearcutting work will cut the same acreage as originally planned but do so in a condensed timeframe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"K2ZLQANX75GA7C2ECP35SEZFFY\"><b>Finding Elk: <\/b><a fall and winter when other food sources become scarce. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T6GWCQ5EARG7NIAVU2YSMRJWKY\">Aspen stands in elk country have been regenerating below the DNR\u2019s standards because of overeating.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"437PBLWQ6JHGZBVK3X5INC7XBI\">Clearcutting gives elk more areas of fresh growth to browse, reducing pressure on any single site and improving long-term regeneration, according to the DNR.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"
