It looks like Lorde<\/a>\u2018s special \u2018Virgin\u2019<\/a> CDs aren\u2019t working, according to fans.<\/p>\n

To accompany her celebrated new album, \u2018Virgin\u2019, Lorde sold now sold-out run of the album on clear plastic CD format<\/a> in line with her vision for \u201ctransparency\u201d. They\u2019re also made from recyclable materials. It\u2019s also the only CD option available for the album.<\/p>\n

However, fans who\u2019ve gotten their hands on the clear plastic CDs are now taking to social media to share that the CDs don\u2019t actually work on most CD players. In a sting of TikTok videos, fans have uploaded clips of them slotting the CDs into their players, only for the player to read \u201cno disc\u201d.<\/p>\n

On fan wrote in their TikTok caption: \u201cseems like they didn\u2019t account for this (: my new lorde transparent CD doesn\u2019t work in this stereo! seems like older models with older sensors won\u2019t play it. pretty disappointing, i know it was for an aesthetic but at least press it on normal CDs too :\/\u201d<\/p>\n

Another detailed their own experiences, saying in a video: \u201cWhoever decided to design this is an idiot because it\u2019s a clear CD. Do you know what that means? Cars can\u2019t read this CD, Walkmans can\u2019t read this CD. And the worst part is, this is the only version of the CD that Lorde is offering \u2013 so I just have to go and return it and get my money back and not actively support her music because the team can\u2019t make a functioning CD for aesthetics.\u201d<\/p>\n

yeah so the Lorde CD doesn\u2019t work on CD players, particularly car ones and walkmans because the design ain\u2019t fit for purpose and Lorde doesn\u2019t offer any other CD options. Reddit users have spoken out about their CD troubles as well. One Reddit user wrote: \u201cTried to put the disc into my car CD player and usually when a CD is put up to it, it just pulls the CD in. But this CD wasn\u2019t even registering so I can\u2019t even get it inside the CD player\u2026 Immediately tried a different CD to see if it was the player but it took the other CD and started playing so it\u2019s definitely the disc.\u201d<\/p>\n

One fan has seemingly cracked the code though. They shared that they\u2019ve already reached out to Universal Music on the matter, but says the CD works with newer and more expensive CD players. They mentioned that they\u2019ve been told to try putting a CD sticker over it but ultimately feels \u201cif I buy something, I want it to work. I don\u2019t want to have to change it myself. I just feel missold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neither Lorde nor her team have addressed the matter yet, and fans have not yet heard back about refunds.<\/p>\n

Despite the CD issue, fans are still loving the album \u2013 it received a four-star review from Alex Rigotti for NME<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cUltimately, \u2018Virgin\u2019 is a vibrant combination of Lorde\u2019s best qualities, and then some. With her newfound candour, the record combines the emotional whirlwind of \u2018Melodrama\u2019, the chilling minimalism of \u2018Pure Heroine\u2019<\/a> and the breezy freedom of \u2018Solar Power\u2019. This might be called \u2018Virgin\u2019, but Lorde proves she\u2019s not afraid to strip herself bare.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the day of the record\u2019s launch (June 27), Lorde played a surprise set at Glastonbury<\/a>, where she performed \u2018Virgin\u2019 in full. In a glowing five-star review of the performance<\/a>, NME\u2018s Rhian Daly wrote: \u201cWith \u2018Virgin\u2019 out today, it\u2019s the perfect time to play it in full \u2013 which is exactly what she does, something she suggests at one point could be a \u201cone of one\u201d occurrence. It\u2019s also a brave choice given most people present won\u2019t have had the chance to listen to the record while in the fields of Worthy Farm yet, but it\u2019s a testament to the music that the crowd stays rapt throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since the album\u2019s release, Lorde has teased that some \u2018Virgin\u2018 b-sides may be on the way. Taking to social media on June 30, she revealed that one of her favourite songs didn\u2019t make the final track list, writing that she cut it \u201clast minute because I thought it diluted the vision.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that it was one of her \u201cabsolute favs\u201d that she wrote with songwriter Fabiana Palladino, who also worked on \u2018Current Affairs\u2019 and \u2018If She Could See Me Now\u2019. As it turns out, it\u2019s not the only unreleased song, with the singer adding: \u201cCouple really good B sides knocking around actually.\u201d<\/p>\n
