{"id":323312,"date":"2025-10-22T08:01:19","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T08:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/323312\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T08:01:19","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T08:01:19","slug":"cometa-architects-designs-barcelona-apartment-with-hand-fan-layout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/323312\/","title":{"rendered":"Cometa Architects designs Barcelona apartment with &#8220;hand fan&#8221; layout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/cometa-architects\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cometa Architects<\/a> has added a custom-made central staircase and created circular cutouts to showcase a historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/bricks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brick<\/a> ceiling at \u00c9ventail, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/barcelona\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barcelona<\/a> home filled with tactile details.<\/p>\n<p>The project takes its name from the layout of the 162-square-metre apartment, which resembles a traditional handheld ribbed fan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260327 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/eventail-cometa-architects-barcelona_dezeen_2364_col_0-852x834.jpg\" alt=\"Bareclona flat with exposed brick\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2313\"  \/>White pebbles decorate the flat and match the lighting<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project unfolds around the metaphor of the \u00e9ventail \u2013 a hand fan that opens in sequence,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/cometaarchitects.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cometa Architects<\/a> partner Fairda Matziaraki told Dezeen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The apartment&#8217;s new layout radiates from an imagined central core that acts as a spatial hinge, organising circulation, light, and program around it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260343 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/eventail-cometa-architects-barcelona_dezeen_2364_col_17-1-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Central white staircase\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>A white staircase is suspended at the centre of the flat<\/p>\n<p>Cometa Architects began by changing the existing interior layout, which Matziaraki described as &#8220;a succession of misaligned doors following a slightly curved path along the facade&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>At \u00c9ventail&#8217;s central core, the studio placed a white staircase that was suspended from vertical rods. Above it, an automated skylight opens up to a 135-square-metre terrace.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260331 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/eventail-cometa-architects-barcelona_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"All-white interior palette\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Cometa Architects wanted to reveal the red-brick ceiling<\/p>\n<p>As well as changing the layout of the apartment, the studio wanted to &#8220;celebrate the contrast&#8221; between its minimalist interior design and the original raw brick walls, which it revealed through ceiling cutouts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted the ceiling to breathe \u2014 to gain depth and gravity, becoming a topography rather than a surface,&#8221; Matziaraki said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/09\/23\/la-comunidad-habitacional-cierto-estudio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/illa-glories-cierto-estudio-architecture-residential-barcelona_dezeen_2364_sq2-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"La Comunidad Habitacional in Barcelona by Cierto Estudio\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Barcelona social housing by Cierto Estudio &#8220;challenges traditional gender roles&#8221;\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Barcelona, we often work with the expressive textures of ceilings, but in this case, we didn&#8217;t want to simply reveal or restore; we wanted to create new dialogues and three-dimensional tensions where the ceiling becomes a structural force, shaping directions and perspectives in space,&#8221; she continued.<\/p>\n<p>Cometa Architects is a design-and-build studio and sourced the materials for the project itself, including wooden floors, microcement, metal paint, lacquered wood and porcelain countertops from its showroom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260334 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/eventail-cometa-architects-barcelona_dezeen_2364_col_10-852x822.jpg\" alt=\"Living room in Barcelona flat\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2281\"  \/>The apartment&#8217;s white colour palette contrasts a tiled floor<\/p>\n<p>Cometa Architects kept the colour palette of the interior uniformly white, with white details spread throughout the space.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We maintained a soft off-white palette to let textures resonate and light move freely across surfaces, creating a balance between precision, warmth, and craft,&#8221; the studio said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the studio also restored the flat&#8217;s traditional tiles, which create a warm contrast against the walls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2260352 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/eventail-cometa-architects-barcelona_dezeen_2364_col_2-852x943.jpg\" alt=\"Rooftop terrace in Barcelona flat\" width=\"2136\" height=\"2364\"  \/>The apartment has a large roof terrace<\/p>\n<p>Among the decorative details on show are sculptural white pebbles, which belong to the owner of the apartment. Cometa Architects matched these with custom-made lights by Greek company Delight.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The round pebble shape is a form we love for its fragility, especially in glass or ceramic,&#8221; Matziaraki said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We love contrasting it with rough backdrops \u2014 imagine how it could be squeezed and pulled by gravity, and the sound of it when it crushes!
