{"id":323333,"date":"2025-10-22T08:12:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T08:12:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/323333\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T08:12:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T08:12:12","slug":"hundreds-of-public-figures-including-ai-godfathers-urge-superintelligence-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/323333\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of public figures including &#8216;AI godfathers&#8217; urge \u2018superintelligence\u2019 ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Worased Boontipchayakun | Istock | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A group of prominent figures, including artificial intelligence and technology experts, has called for an end to efforts to create &#8216;superintelligence&#8217; \u2014 a form of AI that would surpass humans on essentially all cognitive tasks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over 850 people, including tech leaders like Virgin Group founder Richard Branson and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/AAPL\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a> cofounder Steve Wozniak, signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/superintelligence-statement.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> published Wednesday calling\u00a0for a pause in the development of superintelligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The list of signatories was notably topped by prominent AI pioneers, including the computer scientists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/11\/21\/will-ai-replace-humans-yoshua-bengio-warns-of-artificial-intelligence-risks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yoshua Bengio<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/05\/01\/godfather-of-ai-leaves-google-after-a-decade-to-warn-of-dangers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geoff Hinton<\/a>, who are widely considered &#8220;godfathers&#8221; of modern AI. Leading AI researchers like UC Berkeley&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/vcresearch.berkeley.edu\/faculty\/stuart-russell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stuart Russell<\/a> also signed on.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Superintelligence has become a buzzword in the AI world, as companies from Elon Musk&#8217;s xAI to Sam Altman&#8217;s OpenAI compete to release more advanced large language models. Meta notably has gone so far as to name its LLM division the &#8216;Meta Superintelligence Labs.&#8217;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But signatories of the recent statement warn that the prospect of superintelligence has &#8220;raised concerns, ranging from human economic obsolescence and disempowerment, losses of freedom, civil liberties, dignity, and control, to national security risks and even potential human extinction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It called for a ban on developing superintelligence until there is strong public support and a broad scientific consensus that it can be built safely and kept under control.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to AI and tech figures, the names behind the statement came from a broad coalition ranging from academics, media personalities, religious leaders and a bipartisan group of former U.S. politicians and officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those retired officials included former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen and former National Security Advisor Susan Rice.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Steve Bannon and Glen Beck \u2014 influential media allies to U.S. President Donald Trump \u2014 were also prominently featured on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Other high-profile signatories included the British royal family members Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle.
