Americans speak out<\/p>\n<p>From furloughed workers to small business owners, Americans tell USA TODAY Network how the government shutdown is affecting their lives.<\/p>\n<p>New York voters soon head to the polls and mailboxes to cast early ballots for mostly county and municipal races at stake in this off-year election.<\/p>\n<p>Nine days of early voting begin Oct. 25 and end Nov. 2, two days before the Nov. 4 general election. With no Congress seats or state offices up for grabs this year, the races to be decided are largely for spots on county legislatures, town boards and city councils, along with some judgeships and three county executive faceoffs in Westchester, Rockland and Orange.<\/p>\n<p>Early voting&#8217;s upcoming kickoff has also garnered renewed buzz recently as the high-profile New York City mayor&#8217;s race captured national attention, in part, due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2025\/10\/13\/elections-2025-how-mamdani-nyc-mayopr-win-may-affect-2026-ny-governor-house-races\/86546070007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the potential 2026 campaign impact<\/a> of a Zohran Mamdani victory over Andrew Cuomo.<\/p>\n<p>How to cast early ballots in New York elections<\/p>\n<p>Voters may cast early ballots in person at designated sites or by mail by applying for one here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ballotapplication.elections.ny.gov\/home\/earlymail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/ballotapplication.elections.ny.gov\/home\/earlymail<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They can check their registration status here:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/voterlookup.elections.ny.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/voterlookup.elections.ny.gov\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New voters must register by Oct. 25. Jenkins is serving the last year of Latimer&#8217;s term and must now face off with Sculti for a full four-year term.<\/p>\n<p>In Rockland, Republican Ed Day is seeking a fourth term as county executive with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/local\/rockland\/2025\/04\/25\/rockland-county-executive-race-mike-parietti-eyes-run-against-ed-day\/83273651007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent Michael Parietti as his challenger<\/a>. And in neighboring Orange, Republican Steve Neuhaus is also running for a fourth term as county executive, facing off against Democrat Michael Sussman, a longtime civil rights attorney\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/2018\/06\/25\/sussman-aims-to-shake-up\/11894821007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who ran for attorney general as a Green Party candidate in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable races in the region include one to succeed White Plains Mayor Tom Roach, who&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lohud.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2025\/01\/09\/white-plains-ny-mayor-tom-roach-planning-westchester-clerk-run\/77584065007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stepping aside after 15 years to run for Westchester County clerk<\/a>.
