A nonprofit is working to preserve their legacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 The historic charm of Riverside and Avondale continues to shine, thanks to the efforts of Riverside Avondale Preservation \u2014 better known as RAP.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Since the 1970s, the nonprofit has worked to protect the neighborhoods\u2019 legacy, preserving century-old homes and historic storefronts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis particular property is actually part of Brooklyn,\u201d said Elaine Slayton Akin, archivist for RAP. \u201cIt\u2019s so close to Riverside \u2014 just divided by the Fuller Warren Bridge. A lot of the homes here resemble what you\u2019d see in Riverside and Avondale. This home, now part of Friday Musicale, was originally built in the early 20th century by the Jerough family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Just a few blocks away stands another architectural gem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis one\u2019s really special \u2014 it\u2019s called the San Juline,\u201d Akin said. \u201cIt was built in 1915 by Roy Benjamin, one of the most well-known architects in the historic district. It\u2019s one of the first examples of luxury multi-family living in Riverside and Avondale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Further down the street, another estate offers a glimpse into Jacksonville\u2019s past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cNow it\u2019s a co-working space with several offices and businesses inside,\u201d Akin said. \u201cBut originally, it was a residence built by Jay Hawkins in the early 20th century for his daughter and her husband, who was the general counsel for Flagler Railway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">At the final stop, a unique home stands out for its architectural pedigree.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cI\u2019ve worked with the homeowner on research for this house,\u201d Akin said. \u201cWe recently discovered the architect was Albert and Cole. Cole worked in the same firm as Henry Klutho \u2014 a name everyone in the neighborhood knows. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/07\/25\/how-one-of-jacksonvilles-largest-tragedies-birthed-the-citys-greatest-architect-of-all-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.news4jax.com\/news\/local\/2025\/07\/25\/how-one-of-jacksonvilles-largest-tragedies-birthed-the-citys-greatest-architect-of-all-time\/\">Klutho\u2019s work spans downtown and Springfield.
