{"id":323811,"date":"2025-10-22T12:29:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T12:29:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/323811\/"},"modified":"2025-10-22T12:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T12:29:09","slug":"new-charter-school-coming-to-jacksonvilles-northside-amid-declining-public-school-enrollment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/323811\/","title":{"rendered":"New charter school coming to Jacksonville\u2019s Northside amid declining public school enrollment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><strong>JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Construction is underway for a new charter school on Jacksonville\u2019s Northside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Harbour Pointe Charter Academy is expected to serve more than 800 students and will give families on the Northside more educational opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">But the school is being built during a time when more parents are opting out of sending their children to traditional public schools in Duval County.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The new school will be located on 14839 Main St. N. making it the first charter school in the area. The design calls for a two-story building spanning just over 53,000 square feet. It also includes a turf playfield, a parking lot, and space for a future gym.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The city gave the green light for construction by approving a $10.4 million permit. The Summit Construction Management Group, a company based in Orlando, is building the school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\">The school is being funded through a tax-exempt bond, expected to close in Fall 2025. That funding is supported by LENDonate, a platform that helps nonprofits raise money from individuals who want to lend or donate to community projects. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 kNAFkD cuqaEv article-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lendonate.com\/harbour-point-charter-academy\/#:~:text=Why%20Support%20this%20Program,the%20demand%20for%20additional%20schools.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.lendonate.com\/harbour-point-charter-academy\/#:~:text=Why%20Support%20this%20Program,the%20demand%20for%20additional%20schools.\">Harbour Pointe raised $655,000 in pre-development funds through LENDonate to kickstart planning and permitting.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">This comes as Duval County Public Schools are facing both declining enrollment and budget challenges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">To help close the gap, the district is exploring cost-cutting measures \u2014 including school consolidations, staff reassignments, and eliminating vacant positions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">At the same time, more families are choosing charter and private schools, which is contributing to the drop in public school enrollment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Construction for Harbour Pointe is expected to wrap up in August 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The school will serve 818 students in grades K\u20138, and the area is projected to grow by 13.5% over the next 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2025 by WJXT News4JAX &#8211; All rights reserved.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2013 Construction is underway for a new charter school on Jacksonville\u2019s Northside.
