Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (\u201cThe Great North\u201d), known professionally as the Molyneux sisters, are writing the screenplay. Production is expected to begin in early 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs with the original, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/netflix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_netflix\" data-tag=\"netflix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Netflix<\/a> will distribute the \u201cMitchells\u201d sequel as part of a licensing agreement with Sony. The first film was initially slated to be released by Sony Pictures in 2020 after the title was changed to \u201cConnected,\u201d but following delays due to the COVID pandemic, Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/news\/netflix-lord-miller-movie-mitchells-vs-machines-sony-1234889393\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picked up the film<\/a> (under its original title) for reportedly more than $100 million. The studios are planning a more collaborative partnership on the second \u201cMitchells\u201d movie. (Sony\u2019s recent animated feature \u201cKPop Demon Hunters\u201d landed at Netflix under a separate output deal with the streamer; it\u2019s now Netflix\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/kpop-demon-hunters-netflix-most-watched-movie-history-1236496106\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most-watched movie ever<\/a> and the companies are <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/kpop-demon-hunters-2-sequel-sony-netflix-1236499137\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in talks for a sequel<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Mitchells vs. the Machines\u201d follows the titular family as they drive their eldest daughter, Katie (Abbi Jacobson), across the country to film school in California. While en route, a rogue AI called PAL (Olivia Colman) commanders an army of robots to launch a worldwide rebellion against humanity. It\u2019s up to the Mitchells \u2014 including Katie\u2019s technophobic father, Rick (Danny McBride), overly sweet mother, Linda (Maya Rudolph) and hyperactive younger brother, Aaron (Mike Rianda) \u2014\u00a0to save the day. The film won wide praise for its hand-painted animation style, won eight Annie Awards, including for animated feature, and was nominated for best animated feature at the Oscars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPhil Lord and Christopher Miller are producing through their company Lord Miller, and Kurt Albrecht is producing for Sony Pictures Animation. Rianda, who co-wrote and directed the original, is an executive producer, along with Lord Miller\u2019s Aditya Sood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMartinez started out on the 2019 Laika production \u201cMissing Link\u201d; after serving as head of story on the first \u201cMitchells vs. Machines\u201d film, he worked on 2023\u2019s \u201cSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse\u201d and on \u201cKPop Demon Hunters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPrior to co-directing 2025\u2019s \u201cThe Bad Guys 2\u201d with Pierre Perifel, Sans worked as an animator on several DreamWorks Animation films, including \u201cRuby Gillman: Teenage Kraken,\u201d \u201cPuss in Boots: The Last Wish\u201d and \u201cTrolls World Tour.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Mitchells and the machines are readying for a rematch.
