Established by the Korean American community-oriented YS Kim Foundation, Canal Projects supports local and international artists in emergent and established phases of their careers.<\/p>\n<p>Canal Projects opened its doors at 351 Canal Street, a 19th-century cast-iron building with a historic fa\u00e7ade, in <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/767686\/seven-new-art-spaces-to-visit-in-manhattan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September 2022,<\/a> presenting Pray, an exhibition of video works by Thai filmmaker and artist Korakrit Arunanondchai and NYC-based artist and director Alex Gvojic. The nonprofit has since hosted and supported myriad talks, exhibitions, screenings, performances, reading groups, workshops, and other related events onsite, recently including presentations of artists<strong> <\/strong>Sin Wai Kin, Karimah Ashadu, and Geumhyung Jeong.<\/p>\n<p>According to a press statement shared with Hyperallergic, Canal Projects will commit approximately $3 million in funding for upcoming artist projects over three years beginning in May 2026, including financial support for Korean artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.momaps1.org\/en\/programs\/556-ayoung-kim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ayoung Kim\u2019s forthcoming exhibition<\/a> at MoMA PS1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new model will enable the non-profit organization to channel resources globally and expand its impact beyond New York City,\u201d Canal Projects said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"902\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on-async--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-id=\"1051508\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CPT-Install-Day-3-1200x902.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1051508\"  \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"805\" data-wp-class--hide=\"state.isContentHidden\" data-wp-class--show=\"state.isContentVisible\" data-wp-init=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async--click=\"actions.showLightbox\" data-wp-on-async--load=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-wp-on-async-window--resize=\"callbacks.setButtonStyles\" data-id=\"1051507\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Night_Izzy-Leung_Install-05_v02-1200x805.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1051507\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Exhibition views of Charlie Perez-Tlatenchi: \u201cTriumphant Currents, Auspicious Winds\u201d (2025) during daytime and night time (Left photo by Matthew Li and Caroline Taylor Shehan, right photo by Izzy Leung; images courtesy the artist, Canal Projects, and ISCP)<\/p>\n<p>This closure announcement joins the spate of <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/1049937\/altman-siegel-gallery-to-close-next-month\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gallery shutterings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/1042271\/la-louver-to-close-gallery-space-and-shift-into-private-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">model transitions<\/a> sweeping from <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/1032581\/kasmin-and-clearing-galleries-announce-closures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York to California<\/a> over the <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/906097\/behind-the-recent-wave-of-new-york-gallery-closures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last two or so years<\/a> as mounting <a href=\"https:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/1047704\/hauser-wirth-david-zwirner-uk-galleries-report-nearly-90-percent-drop-in-earnings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence<\/a> points to a <a href=\"https:\/\/theartmarket.artbasel.com\/download\/The-Art-Basel-and-UBS-Art-Market-Report-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downturn in the global art market<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Canal Projects told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/canal-projects-art-space-new-york-closing-1234758364\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Artnews<\/a> that \u201cthe costs of maintaining a building with complex and outdated infrastructure was an important factor in the decision to close the space,\u201d and that the gallery itself \u201cwas not functioning in the way that Canal Projects needed it to in order to accommodate their programming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This news comes midway through Sunset Park-native Charlie Perez-Tlatenchi\u2019s solo exhibition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canalprojects.org\/charlie-perez-tlatenchi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Triumphant Currents, Auspicious Winds<\/a> (2025), featuring an 11-panel mural affixed to Canal Projects\u2019s windows and a three-channel video examining the Brooklyn neighborhood\u2019s Mexican and Chinese influences.
