They play key roles in roster construction, and USA Today has ranked the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsdata.usatoday.com\/ncaa\/salaries\/football\/general-manager\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Top 25 highest paid GMs in college football<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the highest-profile general managers is in Chapel Hill where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/michael-lombardi-259838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Lombardi<\/a><\/strong> became the first hire under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/north-carolina-tar-heels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina<\/a><\/strong> head coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/bill-belichick-132037\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill Belichick<\/a><\/strong>. Additionally, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/andrew-luck-5168\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andrew Luck\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> official salary is unknown at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/cardinal-sports-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stanford<\/a><\/strong>, as is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/chad-bowden-180065\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chad Bowden\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/usc-trojans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USC<\/a><\/strong> since both are private schools. Here are the full Top 25 highest-paid general managers in college football.<\/p>\n<p>1. Michael Lombardi, North Carolina: $1.5 million<\/p>\n<p>A former NFL general manager, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/michael-lombardi-259838\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Lombardi<\/a><\/strong> has become one of the prominent figures at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/north-carolina-tar-heels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina<\/a><\/strong> under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/bill-belichick-132037\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bill Belichick<\/a><\/strong>. He left his job as a podcast host and analyst at <strong>VSiN<\/strong> to take over the newly created role, becoming the highest-paid GM in college football at $1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>Lombardi previously worked with Belichick as a coaching staff assistant with the New England Patriots and in the personnel department with the Cleveland Browns. He now takes on a pivotal role in North Carolina\u2019s roster strategy.<\/p>\n<p>2. Mark Pantoni, Ohio State: $900,000<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/OhioStatevsWisconsin-4-1-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Pantoni-Ohio State\" class=\"wp-image-3846311\"  \/>Mark Pantoni (Mick Walker\/Lettermen Row)<\/p>\n<p>Now in his 14th year at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/ohio-state-buckeyes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ohio State<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/mark-pantoni-133938\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Pantoni<\/a><\/strong> has been a crucial part of the Buckeyes\u2019 operation. He previously worked for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/urban-meyer-132190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Urban Meyer<\/a><\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/florida-gators\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Florida<\/a><\/strong> before arriving in Columbus in December 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Pantoni has a lead role in Ohio State\u2019s personnel and recruiting, including NIL negotiations and evaluations, according too the school website. That means he\u2019s front and center as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/ryan-day-133992\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ryan Day<\/a><\/strong> and the Buckeyes attempt to build off last year\u2019s national championship.<\/p>\n<p>3. Marshall Malchow, Oregon: $900,000<\/p>\n<p>When <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/dan-lanning-134322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dan Lanning<\/a><\/strong> arrived at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/oregon-ducks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oregon<\/a><\/strong>, he brought in <strong>Marshall Malchow<\/strong> as chief of staff. That move proved to be a trendsetter in the early stages of the NIL era as Malchow takes on general manager-like roles.<\/p>\n<p>Malchow previously served as the associate athletics director at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/aggie-yell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas A&amp;M<\/a><\/strong> in 2021 and worked closely with the player personnel department. Now, he has a prominent role in building an Oregon roster that ranks as one of the best in college football.<\/p>\n<p>4. Courtney Morgan, Alabama: $825,000<\/p>\n<p>As <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/kalen-deboer-135577\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kalen DeBoer<\/a><\/strong> got off the plane to be introduced as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/alabama-crimson-tide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alabama<\/a><\/strong> head coach in 2024, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/courtney-morgan-26786\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Courtney Morgan<\/a><\/strong> was with him. He was with DeBoer at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/college\/washington-huskies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Washington<\/a><\/strong> from 2022-23 after a year as the general manager at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/michigan-wolverines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Morgan has been front and center in Alabama\u2019s recruiting efforts, helping the Crimson Tide land four five-star recruits last year. He is also the fourth-highest paid GM in college football, according to USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>5. Austin Thomas, LSU: $800,000<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lsu-flag-1024x538.jpg\" alt=\"LSU Tigers logo on a flag\" class=\"wp-image-3138651\"  \/>\u00a9 Petre Thomas-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>A key staff addition for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/brian-kelly-132649\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brian Kelly<\/a><\/strong> in 2024, <strong>Austin Thomas<\/strong> is in his third stint at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/lsu-tigers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LSU<\/a><\/strong>. He was previously the general manager in 2021 and currently serves in his official title of senior associate athletic director for football administration.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his return to LSU, Thomas spent two years under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/lane-kiffin-135051\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lane Kiffin<\/a><\/strong> at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/ole-miss-rebels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ole Miss<\/a><\/strong> as football chief of staff. He\u2019s one of three college football general managers making $800,000 this year, according to USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>6. Pat Stewart, Nebraska: $800,000<\/p>\n<p>As <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/matt-rhule-131152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matt Rhule<\/a><\/strong> looked to hire a general manager at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/nebraska-cornhuskers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nebraska<\/a><\/strong>, he turned to the NFL. That\u2019s where <strong>Pat Stewart<\/strong> was working with the New England Patriots and previously spent time under Rhule with the Caroilna Panthers.<\/p>\n<p>Stewart is in his first season in Lincoln and has a central role in roster construction for the Cornhuskers. Most recently with the Patriots, he worked in the pro personnel department in a similar capacity.<\/p>\n<p>7. Ron Rivera, Cal: $800,000<\/p>\n<p>One of the most notable <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/golden-bear-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cal<\/a><\/strong> football alumni came home this past offseason when <strong>Ron Rivera<\/strong> took over as general manager. Fans also got their wish this past offseason when the school made him the point person for football in a similar arrangement to Andrew Luck at Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>Rivera is the point person for the Golden Bears football program after a long career as an NFL head coach. He made the Super Bowl with the Carolina Panthers and most recently worked for the Washington Commanders before heading back to his alma mater in a newly created role.<\/p>\n<p>8. (Photo by: Carey Murdock \u2013 SoonerScoop.com\/On3)<\/p>\n<p>As <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/brent-venables-131982\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brent Venables<\/a><\/strong> overhauled his staff this offseason, he made quite a splash with a newly created general manager role. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/oklahoma-sooners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oklahoma<\/a><\/strong> landed <strong>Senior Bowl<\/strong> executive director <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/jim-nagy-249737\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Nagy<\/a><\/strong> for the position in a surprising move.<\/p>\n<p>Nagy \u2013 who also interviewed for the New York Jets GM spot \u2013 spent seven years at the helm of the Senior Bowl, holding a prominent role in the pre-draft process. A former NFL scout, he is now one of the 10 highest-paid general managers in college football, according to USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>9. Vince Marrow, Louisville: $714,000<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest offseason moves occurred in Kentucky. That\u2019s where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/vince-marrow-132250\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vince Marrow<\/a><\/strong> left <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/kentucky-wildcats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kentucky<\/a><\/strong> for rival <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/sites\/cardinal-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Louisville<\/a><\/strong> to become <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/jeff-brohm-133414\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jeff Brohm\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> general manager.<\/p>\n<p>Marrow served as the associate head coach and tight ends coach at UK from 2013-25. He was also a crucial part of the recruiting efforts under <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/mark-stoops-132239\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mark Stoops<\/a><\/strong>, and now leads the charge for Brohm at UL.<\/p>\n<p>10. Brandon Harris, Texas: $600,000<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the Top 10 highest-paid general managers in college football, <strong>Brandon Harris<\/strong> started out as an analyst and assistant running backs coach at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/texas-longhorns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Texas<\/a><\/strong>. He then moved over to director of recruiting upon <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/rivals\/coach\/steve-sarkisian-132832\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Sarkisian\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> arrival and became the program\u2019s general manager in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Harris played college football at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/lsu-tigers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LSU<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.on3.com\/teams\/north-carolina-tar-heels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Carolina<\/a><\/strong> before getting into coaching.
