{"id":325645,"date":"2025-10-23T05:02:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T05:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/325645\/"},"modified":"2025-10-23T05:02:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T05:02:15","slug":"drugs-that-lower-cholesterol-may-also-reduce-dementia-risk-says-huge-new-study-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/325645\/","title":{"rendered":"Drugs That Lower Cholesterol May Also Reduce Dementia Risk, Says Huge New Study : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reducing cholesterol levels might not just be good for your heart; they might also be effective at reducing your risk of dementia, according to a comprehensive  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/meta-analysis\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73088\" data-postid=\"177959\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">meta-analysis<\/a> involving close to a million participants.<\/p>\n<p>The results imply that medications commonly taken to reduce cholesterol levels, including statins and ezetimibe, may also have benefits for our cognitive health.<\/p>\n<p>Led by researchers from the University of Bristol in the UK and the Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, the study builds on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/statins-could-reduce-dementia-risk-even-in-people-with-low-cholesterol\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">previous research<\/a> linking &#8216;bad&#8217; cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or LDL-C) and dementia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/how-you-make-your-coffee-could-affect-your-cholesterol-levels\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How You Make Your Coffee Could Affect Your Cholesterol Levels<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a new idea, but this latest research gives us one of the most detailed datasets and strongest pieces of evidence yet that the association exists \u2013 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-alzheimers-treatment-clears-plaques-from-brains-of-mice-within-hours\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">that treatments<\/a> could potentially tackle both problems at once.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The present data suggests that cholesterol lowering earlier in life likely will reduce the risk of dementia later in life,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.70638\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>This study didn&#8217;t track people taking medication for high cholesterol. Instead, it used genetic variants that tend to lower cholesterol as a stand-in for a lifetime of taking drugs like statins \u2013 an approach known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mendelian_randomization\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mendelian Randomization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ElderlyPeople.jpg\" alt=\"Elderly people\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" class=\"wp-image-177962 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Around 57 million people are living with dementia worldwide. (<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/two-people-sitting-on-pavement-facing-on-body-of-water-zlA7c39DfFk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sven Mieke\/Unsplash<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>A key benefit of comparing genes is that it eliminates the influence of factors such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/why-exercise-is-an-important-pillar-of-any-weight-management-regimen\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diet and exercise<\/a>, which are harder to track with precision.<\/p>\n<p>The team found a notable correlation between genetics that predicted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/eating-eggs-can-actually-lower-bad-cholesterol-new-study-says\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">low cholesterol<\/a> and a lower risk of dementia, suggesting the biological paths affected by genes that keep cholesterol low \u2013 and which are targeted by statins and ezetimibe \u2013 also influence the likelihood of dementia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What our study indicates is that if you have these variants that lower your cholesterol, it looks like you have a significantly lower risk of developing dementia,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/news\/2025\/october\/cholesterol-dementia-study.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a> clinical biochemist Liv Tybj\u00e6rg Nordestgaard, who was at the University of Bristol during the course of the study.<\/p>\n<p>By using a Mendelian Randomization approach in combination with a large dataset, the study could confidently show that having these genes, and therefore lower cholesterol levels, was likely to be the reason individuals had a reduced risk of dementia.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atherosclerosis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">atherosclerosis<\/a> \u2013 a build-up of fatty cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels \u2013 may represent a critical feature of the pathology.
