It provides home and shelter for hundreds of other species. It also protects shorelines from erosion,” Professor Vergés says.

“It’s very productive, it captures large amounts of carbon and a lot of that carbon is sequestered in that ecosystem for hundreds of thousands of years.”

But in recent decades Gamay, Botany Bay has become increasingly industrialised. It is home to the runways of Sydney Airport as well as one of the busiest ports in the country, Port Botany.

“It’s a bay that has been very, very impacted by humans, and as a consequence we’ve lost probably about 50 per cent of the seagrass habitat that would have been here,” Professor Vergés says.

“We are kind of heading towards localised extinction unless we do something about it.”

Biochar could help replanted seagrassFind stories of ancient Australia near you

There are ways to see into the deep past all around the country.

The Gamay Rangers and UNSW research teams are on a restoration mission, collecting and replanting washed-up seagrass fragments.

They are experimenting with using biochar, the charcoal-like substance left over after burning, on the replanted seagrass in a section of the bay.

The team is hopeful biochar will improve the long-term survival and growth of transplanted seagrass.

“Biochar has been used for a long time. It has been used in agriculture to improve crop yields,” UNSW PhD student Ann Flemming Nielsen says.

Bryce Liddell and Adriana Vergés inspect a seagrass restoration site near Kurnell. And what is biochar anyway?

“We find it very interesting to hear a lot of how they have used burning to care for country and now to see if we can use it to care for the seagrass as well,” she says.

The experiment is in the data collection phase. If the results prove successful, it may be used more broadly.

Seagrass growing well

On the Kurnell side of Gamay, Botany Bay, replanting has been underway for a couple of years.

Progress was inspected during a recent monitoring dive.

“The seagrass is looking beautiful, it’s bright green, it’s growing well,” Professor Vergés says.

But there is still significant work to be done, according to the UNSW marine ecology professor.

“It’s sparse, so we need to build the numbers up but what’s there is looking really healthy, which is super encouraging.”

Bryce Liddell, researcher Erin McCosker and Adriana Vergés complete a seagrass monitoring dive.
