Alarming reports that 154,000 New York City public-school students<\/a> are \u201chomeless\u201d rely on a dubious definition used in no other context. <\/p>\n

Per the city Department of Homeless Services<\/a>, fewer than 31,000 children now live in the shelter system. In fact, the entire count is just 86,000 people, roughly half the number of schoolchildren <\/a>you\u2019re being told are homeless.<\/p>\n

What gives?<\/p>\n

A federal law that lets homeless kids attend the same school, even if they leave the district, defines homelessness as lacking a \u201cfixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.\u201d<\/p>\n

But this has come to include, for instance, a single mother and her children staying with a relative, or even a teen mother who still lives with her own mom.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Living \u201cdoubled-up\u201d like this may not be ideal, but it\u2019s not living on the streets or in shelters. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s why Homeless Services doesn\u2019t count the doubled-up as homeless,<\/a> and why it doesn\u2019t prioritize you for public housing: To city housing agencies, living with a relative counts as housing.<\/p>\n

The number of children living in shelters has doubled the last few years, but that\u2019s thanks to the migrant crisis.<\/a> Even today, the city is housing an extra 35,000 people \u2014 adults and kids \u2014 than before the Biden border boom.<\/p>\n

Living in close quarters isn\u2019t enviable, but even many well-off New York City kids share bedrooms.<\/p>\n
