Adams was running for reelection himself<\/a> until ending his campaign and exiting the race<\/a> in late September. The outgoing mayor has been an outspoken critic of Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani<\/a> and has been rumored to be considering throwing his support behind Cuomo<\/a> for the past week or so.\u00a0<\/p>\n Cuomo, who spent years serving as governor of New York before he was forced to resign in 2021<\/a>,\u00a0lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani<\/a> and has been consistently polling second<\/a> heading into the general election. A\u00a0poll earlier this week<\/a> showed Mamdani holding onto a double-digit lead in a three-way race with Republican Curtis Sliwa.\u00a0<\/p>\n The poll, meanwhile, found it would be neck-and-neck between Mamdani and Cuomo if Sliwa were to exit and make it a two-way matchup.\u00a0<\/p>\n Sliwa has repeatedly vowed to stay in the race<\/a>, even parting with longtime WABC radio boss John Catsimatidis<\/a>.<\/p>\n Key takeaways from the NYC mayoral debate<\/p>\n The candidates made their case to voters and covered a lot of ground<\/a> in Wednesday night’s debate.\u00a0<\/p>\n They were asked to address the recent federal immigration raids<\/a> and how to handle threats from the Trump administration<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n They also spoke about the NYPD and all agreed Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch<\/a> should remain the department’s top brass.\u00a0<\/p>\n Mamdani called out Cuomo over his sexual harassment scandal as governor<\/a>, and both Cuomo and Sliwa questioned Mamdani about his stance on Israel<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n They also offered up their ideas for mass transit and what should be done about the deadline to close Rikers Island.\u00a0<\/p>\n Why did Mayor Adams drop out?<\/p>\n Adams took office as\u00a0the city’s 110th mayor in January 2022<\/a>\u00a0after serving as Brooklyn Borough President.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n He\u00a0ended his reelection campaign on Sept. 28<\/a>, but his name will still appear on the ballot under an independent line.\u00a0<\/p>\n It has been a\u00a0tumultuous past year<\/a>\u00a0for the mayor and his administration. He was\u00a0indicted on federal bribery charges<\/a>, which\u00a0he denied<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0were later dropped<\/a>. The dismissal also\u00a0raised questions about his relationship with President Trump<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0influence of the White House on City Hall<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n Adams\u00a0maintained his innocence<\/a>\u00a0and his ability to lead the city,\u00a0launching his reelection campaign<\/a>\u00a0over the summer. But most polls showed him\u00a0garnering single-digit support<\/a>, trailing well behind Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa.<\/p>\n “Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my reelection campaign. The constant media speculation about my future and the Campaign Finance Board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign,” Adams said in a video announcement when he dropped out. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Independent candidate Jim Walden\u00a0also ended his campaign and exited the race<\/a>, but the Board of Elections ruled he\u00a0missed the May 30 deadline to remove his name from the ballot<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New York City Mayor Eric Adams will endorse former Gov.
