Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is calling for the resignation<\/a> of Alamo\u00a0Trust Inc. President and CEO Kate Rogers, citing \u201ctroubling\u201d past writings he says are \u201cincompatible with the telling of the history of the battle of the Alamo.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Alamo Trust has been under new scrutiny after a since-deleted social media post <\/a>honoring \u201cIndigenous Peoples and their communities\u201d and \u201ctheir history at the Alamo\u201d went viral earlier this month. <\/p>\n

On Thursday, Patrick pointed to writings from Rogers\u2019 dissertation for her doctoral work,<\/a> which she finished in 2023, but he said had only recently been \u201cdiscovered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rogers wrote at the time that she generally disagreed<\/a> with the state\u2019s efforts to control what\u2019s taught in the classroom \u2014 efforts that have only ramped up<\/a> since President Donald Trump returned to office at the beginning of this year.<\/p>\n

She also noted the challenge of balancing her own personal political views those of the state\u2019s conservative-dominated legislature, where Patrick has played a major role in steering state money<\/a> toward the Alamo\u2019s redevelopment.<\/p>\n

\u201cPersonally, I would love to see the Alamo become a beacon of historical reconciliation, and place that brings people together instead of tearing them apart,\u201d she wrote. But politically, \u201cthat may not be possible.\u201d <\/p>\n

Rogers said Thursday she had no comment to offer at this time. <\/p>\n

Locally, she\u2019s been lauded for her work balancing the desires of conservative state leaders holding the purse strings with those of a blue city that also feels much ownership over how the Alamo\u2019s history is presented.<\/p>\n

Just a year ago they were all together in San Antonio, celebrating the groundbreaking<\/a> of the new Alamo Visitor Center and Museum.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod brought together this puzzle of people from different walks of life, of different political parties, and we came together at the right time,\u201d Patrick said at that event.<\/p>\n

The Alamo Trust is overseen by its board of directors, which just promoted Rogers from executive director to president and CEO in August. But as\u00a0Rogers noted<\/a>\u00a0in her dissertation, the Alamo is under control of the Texas General Land Office, which keeps them on a short leash.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe staff there is heavily involved nearly every decision I make,\u201d Rogers wrote. \u201cEspecially those that could have political implications for the [Land] Commissioner and his or her staff members, who are always on high alert.\u201d<\/p>\n

To her point, earlier this month the Trust\u2019s Indigenous Peoples day post on X caught the attention of the conservative media outlet Texas Scorecard, which flagged it for Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham.<\/p>\n

Buckingham immediately responded that<\/a> \u201cwoke has no place\u201d at the Alamo, and that \u201cwe will be holding those responsible accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

That was Oct. 14.<\/p>\n

By Oct. 23, Patrick said in a letter<\/a> to the Alamo Trust\u2019s board of directors that he\u2019d notified Rogers about his concerns.<\/p>\n

\u201cI suggested she offer her resignation before the board considers the matter,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Lt. Gov.
