{"id":327836,"date":"2025-10-24T01:00:20","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T01:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/327836\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T01:00:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T01:00:20","slug":"rather-than-follow-their-brothers-path-dallas-area-high-school-qbs-carve-their-own","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/327836\/","title":{"rendered":"Rather than follow their brothers\u2019 path, Dallas-area high school QBs carve their own"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Next football season will take some getting used to for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/denton-ryan-school\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/denton-ryan-school\/\">Denton Ryan<\/a> coach Dave Henigan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">All three of his sons \u2014 Ian, Seth and Quin Henigan \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/football\/2024\/12\/12\/with-trip-to-state-title-on-the-line-denton-ryans-quin-henigan-was-raised-for-the-moment\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/high-school-sports\/football\/2024\/12\/12\/with-trip-to-state-title-on-the-line-denton-ryans-quin-henigan-was-raised-for-the-moment\/\">have played quarterback for him at Ryan<\/a>. Quin, the youngest Henigan brother, is in his senior season.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cProbably six of the last eight years one of my kids has been the quarterback,\u201d said Dave, who led Ryan to the 5A Division I state championship in 2020 with Seth as the signal-caller. \u201cThat will be different for sure [when Quin graduates], but the first 20 years I didn\u2019t have my kid as a quarterback.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Quin grew up watching Ian and Seth on the sidelines, and now he\u2019s QB1 at Ryan. The two-year starter has helped lead Ryan, the state\u2019s fifth-ranked 5A Division I team, to a 6\u20131 record this season. He got so much better over the years and it was really fun to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Brett is following in Drew\u2019s footsteps, but his big brother wasn\u2019t the first Kates to star at Richland. Richland coach Ged Kates, the oldest of three boys, also played for the school. So did his two brothers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t really know where our football program stops and our family begins at this point,\u201d Ged said. \u201cIt\u2019s all encompassing. Besides our faith, it\u2019s all we talk about at our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The Kates dynasty likely won\u2019t stop at Brett. Colton remembers serving as a ball boy on the sidelines as he watched his brother Garrett star at quarterback. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cIt was awesome,\u201d Colton said. \u201cIt was great watching him play. It was one of my favorite things to do. House\/Special Contributor)<\/p>\n<p>Stewart \/ Special Contributor<\/p>\n<p>Playing their own game<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Colton, who has also made a name for himself as a hooper at Marcus, said he thinks he\u2019s a bit more athletic than his older brother Garrett. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The four-star prospect with at least 20 college offers has rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns this season. As a passer, the young Nussmeier has recorded 1,382 yards and 12 scores for Marcus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Colton tries not to compare himself to Garrett.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t really worry about that other stuff,\u201d Colton said. \u201c[Garrett] tells me to keep being me and just play my game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Related<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"aspect-ratio:190 \/ 127\" class=\"dmnc_features-article-body-embeds-related-story-module__2UraD flex-none object-cover dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain dmnc_images-modern-image-module__P3kZ4 w-full\" width=\"190\" height=\"127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/EY2JUPEEEJH27NALODYDJIUQMM.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">After watching Drew excel at Richland, Brett said he\u2019s been motivated to outwork him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">That healthy competition has helped Brett thrive in his first season as Richland\u2019s starting quarterback. He\u2019s got 1,396 passing yards and 14 passing touchdowns on the year for 5\u20132 Richland. As a junior in 2024, he passed for 2,615 yards and 32 touchdowns. Ryan advanced to the 5A Division I state semifinals, where it lost 24-21 to Highland Park. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s the most explosive. He\u2019s the fastest runner. Pool \/ Staff Photographer<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Seth Henigan, who went on to play college football at Memphis, helped deliver Ryan its third state title. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Some are expecting Quin, who has recorded 1,283 passing yards and 11 passing touchdowns this season, to produce those same results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">But Dad said those expectations aren\u2019t productive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone wants to talk about comparing Quin to Seth because they\u2019re the two most recent and we won the state title when Seth was here,\u201d Dave said. \u201cThat\u2019s not fair to Quin. Quin\u2019s his own player. Quin has different teammates. Quin has a different team.
