{"id":328070,"date":"2025-10-24T02:59:09","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T02:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/328070\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T02:59:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T02:59:09","slug":"the-new-childrens-booker-prize-aims-to-reward-quality-fiction-for-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/328070\/","title":{"rendered":"The new Children&#8217;s Booker Prize aims to reward quality fiction for kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 Britain\u2019s most prestigious literary prize is getting a younger sibling.<\/p>\n<p>The Booker Prize Foundation announced Friday that it is setting up the Children\u2019s Booker Prize alongside its existing awards for English-language and translated fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Like its sister prizes, the children\u2019s award comes with a 50,000 pound ($67,000) purse.<\/p>\n<p>The prize will open for submissions early next year and the inaugural award will be handed out in 2027, with the winner picked by a jury of children and adults led by writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Britain\u2019s current children\u2019s laureate.<\/p>\n<p>Cottrell-Boyce, whose books include the Carnegie Medal-winning \u201cMillions,\u201d said he was \u201cbuzzing\u201d about the prospect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be \u2013 as they say \u2013 absolute scenes in there. Let the yelling commence,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Funded by the arts, environment and education charity AKO Foundation, the new award will be open to fiction from any country aimed at children aged 8 to 12, either written in English or translated, and published in the U.K. or Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Booker Prize Foundation Chief Executive Gaby Wood said the prize aimed to inspire more young people to read and be \u201ca seed from which we hope future generations of lifelong readers will grow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original Booker Prize was founded in 1969 and has established a reputation for transforming writers\u2019 careers. Its winners have included Salman Rushdie, Margaret Atwood, Ian McEwan, Arundhati Roy and Hilary Mantel.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s winner will be announced on Nov. 10.<\/p>\n<p>The International Booker Prize was established in 2005 as a lifetime achievement award. Since 2016 it has gone to a single work of translated fiction, with the prize money split between author and translator.
