As of Oct. 23, <a href=\"https:\/\/orbit.ing-now.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">there are over 14,000 satellites<\/a> orbiting the planet, <a href=\"https:\/\/orbit.ing-now.com\/low-earth-orbit\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 7,000 of which are active in low Earth orbit<\/a>, according to the satellite tracking website Orbiting Now. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:4096 \/ 2732\"   class=\"dmnc_images-modern-image-module__QFaG- max-w-full h-auto text-white dmnc_images-modern-image-module__9Zlll bg-gray-light object-contain\" width=\"4096\" height=\"2732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/VA47WMMPHNF3XOACB2Y4WI4N6Q.jpg\" alt=\"Rafik Addou is an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at UT Dallas and...\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rafik Addou is an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at UT Dallas and the leader of the research project.<\/p>\n<p>sarah wall<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">For low Earth orbit satellites, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/impacts\/satellite-drag\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/impacts\/satellite-drag\">atmospheric drag<\/a> is much like flying into a strong headwind. Gas molecules in the upper atmosphere constantly collide with satellites; when the Sun becomes more active \u2014 such as during a solar storm \u2014 the density of those molecules increases. Each collision is tiny, but cumulatively they can alter a satellite\u2019s speed and altitude, shortening its lifespan. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">For example, 38 Starlink satellites <a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/toc\/10.1002\/(ISSN)1542-7390.STRLNK2022\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fell out of orbit<\/a> after a geomagnetic storm hit Earth\u2019s atmosphere in February 2022. Solar eruptions made the upper atmosphere thicker than usual, causing extra drag. <a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2024SpWea..2203716B\/abstract\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Some research suggests<\/a> the Starlink satellites were launched too low and were relatively light for their size, contributing to the impact of the drag. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The other foe of low-orbit satellites is <a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/citations\/20190027587\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/citations\/20190027587\">atomic oxygen<\/a>. These single oxygen atoms move at high speeds, chewing away at and corroding exposed surfaces over time. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The protective coating being designed at UT Dallas aims to blunt both atmospheric drag and erosion. Using a method that turns nanoparticles in a liquid solution into solid materials, the team creates a smooth protective layer resistant to atmospheric drag. They then use an application technique to paint on one or several layers precisely and evenly, just a few atoms thick each time. Results from independent tests show the coating withstood atomic-oxygen conditions harsher than those in space, Addou said. <\/p>\n<p>Future goals <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The research comes at a time when as many as 70,000 low Earth orbit satellites are expected to be launched over the next five years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goldmansachs.com\/insights\/articles\/the-global-satellite-market-is-forecast-to-become-seven-times-bigger\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to a 2025 report<\/a> by Goldman Sachs Research. He and his colleagues also hope their coating could one day allow satellites to fly safely in the very low Earth orbit, about 60 to 280 miles above the planet, where there are more damaging levels of atomic oxygen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Flying satellites in very low Earth orbit is being considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Enabling_Support\/Preparing_for_the_Future\/Discovery_and_Preparation\/ESA_seeks_space_applications_ideas_in_Very_Low_Earth_Orbit\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by some space scientists<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/rdw.com\/capabilities\/vleo\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">others<\/a> as a solution <a href=\"https:\/\/aeroastro.mit.edu\/news-impact\/arclab-for-space-com-is-low-earth-orbit-getting-too-crowded-new-study-rings-an-alarm-bell\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the overcrowding<\/a> of satellites and space junk in low Earth orbit. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.policy.manchester.ac.uk\/posts\/2022\/12\/making-space-sustainable-can-very-low-earth-orbits-enable-a-more-resilient-space-environment\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Some scientists say<\/a> very low Earth orbit satellites could lead to quicker communications systems and better imagery resolution, thereby reducing satellite size and cost.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Miriam Fauzia is a science reporting fellow at The Dallas Morning News.
