JACKSONVILLE, Fla.<\/strong> \u2013 Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) celebrated on Friday the completion of the structural phase of the new Concourse B.<\/p>\n

Officials from Balfour Beatty, the construction company managing the project, and representatives from the Jacksonville Aviation Authority held a topping out ceremony to celebrate the \u201cmajor milestone\u201d in the expansion of the airport\u2019s terminal facilities.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a long time. Stop, start, stop, start. We\u2019ve been waiting for this for decades, and so it\u2019s coming to a fruition, and we\u2019re very excited for everybody in Jacksonville.<\/p>\n

According to JAA, the new $300 million concourse project will include six additional gates, new restaurants and other retail offerings.<\/p>\n

In April, Michael Stewart, JAA\u2019s vice president of external affairs, told News4JAX that the addition of these gates will improve the efficiency of current operations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will help us with the efficiency of the current operation, and it will be able to we\u2019ll be able to grow the number of operations here because of these additional gates,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

With the new gates, JAX will be better positioned to accommodate increased service as the region grows.<\/p>\n

When asked whether the new concourse would attract more flights, Stewart clarified, \u201cThat is not the primary reason\u201d for the expansion.<\/p>\n

\u201dThe primary reason, obviously, is growth in the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia area, and as this area grows, there will be additional service coming to Northeast Florida,” Stewart said.<\/p>\n
