{"id":329809,"date":"2025-10-24T19:05:17","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T19:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/329809\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T19:05:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T19:05:17","slug":"ontario-premier-doesnt-back-down-against-trump-posts-video-of-reagan-opposing-tariffs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/329809\/","title":{"rendered":"Ontario premier doesn&#8217;t back down against Trump, posts video of Reagan opposing tariffs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TORONTO (AP) \u2014 The leader of Canada\u2019s most populous province posted remarks by former U.S. President Ronald Reagan on social media on Friday showing Reagan opposed tariffs, hours after President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> announced he\u2019s ending \u201call trade negotiations\u201d with Canada because of a television ad that Trump said misstates Reagan\u2019s opposition to tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Ontario Premier Doug Ford didn\u2019t back down and said Canada and the U.S. are friends, neighbors and allies and Reagan knew that both are stronger together. Ford then provided a link to a Reagan speech where the late president voices opposition to tariffs. <\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Ford said the ad will run Friday night during Game 1 of the World Series between the Toronto Blue Jays and Los Angeles Dodgers.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday Trump posted, \u201cThe Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump doubled down on his criticism of the Ontario ads again on Friday and accused Canada of trying to influence an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court ruling on his global tariff regime.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"more-section-display-name\"\/><\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"Link\" aria-label=\"Trump says a Canadian ad misstated Ronald Reagan\u2019s views on tariffs. Canadian officials remain ready to continue talks to reduce tariffs in certain sectors, he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t control the trade policy of the United States. We recognize that that policy has fundamentally changed from the 1980s,\u201d Carney said Friday morning before boarding a flight to Asia. \u201cWe have to focus on what we can control and realize what we can\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carney is trying to secure <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-carney-white-house-59b735b719247c7063777c1edcb10328\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a trade deal with Trump<\/a>, but tariffs are <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-stellantis-ontario-trump-0313f7c512195195c6521fccbefd9dd3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taking a toll<\/a> in the aluminum, steel, auto and lumber sectors.<\/p>\n<p>White House spokesman Kush Desai said talks with Canada have not led to any constructive progress. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOntario\u2019s taxpayer-funded ad campaign on American TV networks \u2013 that misleadingly edited President Reagan\u2019s 1987 radio address about trade \u2013 is the latest example of how Canadian officials would rather play games than engage with the Administration,\u201d Desai said in a statement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs President Trump made clear on Truth Social, further talks are a futile effort if Canada can\u2019t be serious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario government has said it would pay about $75 million Canadian (US$54 million) for the ads to air across multiple American television stations using audio and video of former president Reagan speaking about tariffs in 1987.<\/p>\n<p>Ford said earlier this week he had heard that Trump had seen the ad. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure he wasn\u2019t too happy,\u201d Ford said. <\/p>\n<p>He said the aim is to \u201cblast\u201d the pro-trade message to Americans. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s real, because it was coming from the best president the country\u2019s ever seen, Ronald Reagan,\u201d Ford said. \u201cI feel the Reagan Republicans are going to be fighting with the MAGA group, and let\u2019s hope, Reagan Republicans win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ford is a populist conservative who doesn\u2019t belong to the same party as Carney, a Liberal. <\/p>\n<p>Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew backed Ford. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that these ads are working. If you throw a rock at a lake and you don\u2019t hear a splash, you probably missed. So to my good friend Doug Ford, keep the ads on TV. They\u2019re effective, and this country is behind you,\u201d Kinew said. <\/p>\n<p>The premier of British Columbia, David Eby, said he will make ads that defend the lumber industry, saying Americans need to hear how tariffs raise prices. <\/p>\n<p>But Daniel B\u00e9land, a political science professor at McGill University in Montreal, said the ad has backfired \u201cbig time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarney probably needs to speak to Ford and other premiers to bring some sense of public unity to Team Canada,\u201d B\u00e9land said. <\/p>\n<p>Trump has been threatening Canada\u2019s economy and sovereignty with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-us-trade-tariffs-trump-3bcf97fc94c5b24324d255edc2f00d32\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tariffs<\/a>, most offensively by claiming Canada could be <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/canada-trump-us-state-131dcff58a8f56116765f160d9f35460\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cthe 51st state.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jason Kenney, a former Conservative cabinet minister under ex-Prime Minister Stephen Harper, called Trump\u2019s posts \u201cjust embarrassing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ontario ad does not misrepresent President Reagan\u2019s anti-tariff radio address in any respect whatsoever. It is a direct replay of his radio address, formatted for a one minute ad,\u201d Kenney posted on social media.<\/p>\n<p>Kenney also took aim at the Reagan foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey know perfectly well that the Ontario ad captures precisely President Reagan\u2019s opposition to tariffs, and support for free trade.
