{"id":329944,"date":"2025-10-24T20:29:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T20:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/329944\/"},"modified":"2025-10-24T20:29:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T20:29:16","slug":"dallas-immigrant-advocates-say-potential-police-ice-partnership-would-erode-publics-trust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/329944\/","title":{"rendered":"Dallas immigrant advocates say potential police-ICE partnership would erode public\u2019s trust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">Immigrant rights advocates gathered Friday outside Dallas City Hall to protest a potential partnership floated by Mayor Eric Johnson that would authorize some police officers to enforce federal immigration laws \u2014 a move critics say would erode trust between police and the city\u2019s immigrant communities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The event, organized by Vecinos Unidos DFW, the Mexican American Bar Association of Dallas and Somos Tejas, urged city leaders to reject entering into a \u201c287(g) agreement,\u201d a federal program that deputizes local officers to enforce immigration laws. Last week, Dallas police Chief Daniel Comeaux told the city\u2019s Community Police Oversight Board that he had declined a $25 million offer to join the program, saying the department \u201cabsolutely\u201d would not participate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re a statewide organization fighting for immigrant rights and immigrant dignity in Texas,\u201d Jennifer Sanchez, a legislative coordinator with the Texas Civil Rights Project, said during Friday\u2019s news conference, \u201cbut what we\u2019re talking about today is Dallas\u2019 deal with the devil, not about dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The spate of speakers at the news conference denounced the reimbursement proposal, with some applauding Comeaux for rejecting it. Moreno said he attended the news conference after hearing some feedback from constituents, though not yet in \u201clarge numbers,\u201d Moreno said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\">The two council members also said it was important, should consideration of the proposal move forward, for the discussions to be held in public view.
