{"id":330586,"date":"2025-10-25T02:54:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T02:54:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/330586\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T02:54:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T02:54:16","slug":"us-imposes-sanctions-against-colombias-leader","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/330586\/","title":{"rendered":"US imposes sanctions against Colombia&#8217;s leader"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Trump administration imposed sanctions Friday on Colombian President <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/gustavo-petro\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Gustavo Petro<\/a>, his family and a member of his government over accusations of involvement in the global drug trade, sharply escalating <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-petro-colombia-drugs-us-aid-c3955b2ce351737119920741178e0567\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tensions with the leftist leader<\/a> of one of the closest U.S. allies in South America.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury Department leveled the penalties against Petro; his wife, Veronica del Socorro Alcocer Garcia; his son, Nicolas Fernando Petro Burgos; and Colombian Interior Minister Armando Alberto Benedetti. <\/p>\n<p>Petro \u201chas allowed drug cartels to flourish and refused to stop this activity,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. \u201cPresident Trump is taking strong action to protect our nation and make clear that we will not tolerate the trafficking of drugs into our nation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The move ramps up a growing clash between the Republican U.S. president and Colombia\u2019s first leftist leader, notably over <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-boat-strikes-caribbean-military-venezuela-timeline-2dd9d16f4f74d9dfa4aca76d3123678d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deadly American strikes<\/a> on alleged drug-carrying boats off South America. <\/p>\n<p>This week, the Trump administration <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cartels-drug-boat-strike-ffb1b720fa018336316238463924b78a\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expanded its crackdown<\/a> to the eastern Pacific Ocean, where much of the cocaine from the world\u2019s largest producers, including Colombia, is smuggled. And in an escalation of military firepower in the region, the U.S. military is <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-cartels-hegseth-drugs-boat-strikes-6c3316b2852723e26c39dc701bba9d52\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sending an aircraft carrier<\/a> to the waters off South America, the Pentagon announced Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Petro responds \u2018never on our knees\u2019<\/p>\n<p>After the sanctions were announced, Petro named an attorney he said will represent him in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombating drug trafficking effectively for decades brings me this measure from the government of the society we helped so much to stop its use of cocaine,\u201d Petro wrote on X. \u201cQuite a paradox, but not one step back and never on our knees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. last month added Colombia, the top recipient of American assistance in the region, to a list of nations <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-colombia-drug-war-cooperation-14493c8f7a9af102a8a29cc368ac1e03\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">failing to cooperate in the drug war<\/a> for the first time in almost 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Following that decision, the State Department is \u201cslashing assistance for Colombia,\u201d spokesman Tommy Pigott <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/StateDeputySpox\/status\/1981809407270023546\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said on social media<\/a>. U.S. aid is expected to be cut by at least 20%, or roughly $18 million, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to offer details that have not been made public. The amount was an estimate and could change.<\/p>\n<p>A State Department statement Friday did not specify the dollar amount affected. <\/p>\n<p>The penalties were expected after Trump vowed to pull all payments to Colombia, which amounted to an estimated $230 million in the budget year that ended Sept. 30, a drop from recent years, when the aid exceeded $700 million, according to U.S. figures.<\/p>\n<p>He also recently threatened to impose tariffs on its exports, referring to Petro on social media in recent days as \u201can illegal drug leader.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a guy that is making a lot of drugs,\u201d Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday. \u201cHe better watch it, or we\u2019ll take very serious action against him and his country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Trump accused him of having ties to drug trafficking, Petro on Wednesday said he would resort to the U.S. court system to defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst the calumnies that high-ranking officials have hurled at me on U.S. soil, I will defend myself judicially with American lawyers in the U.S. courts,\u201d Petro wrote on X without naming Trump but citing a news report about his comments. <\/p>\n<p>A day earlier, Petro\u2019s anti-drug policy was the subject of a meeting between him and the U.S. charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires in Colombia, John T. McNamara. McNamara also met with Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio Mapy on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Colombian president defends his drug policy<\/p>\n<p>Petro has repeatedly defended his policy, which moves away from a repressive approach and prioritizes reaching agreements with <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cocaine-canyon-colombia-rebels-peace-e3dc1e42c1a0a8b67e27ef583348fd86\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">growers of coca leaf<\/a> \u2014 the raw material for cocaine \u2014 to encourage them to switch to other crops, pursuing major drug lords and combating money laundering. He has said his government has achieved record cocaine seizures and questioned U.N. figures showing <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/colombia-coca-crop-033c449cf1124b4ce23cec3716e1aeef\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record coca leaf cultivation and cocaine production<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of land dedicated to cultivating coca has almost tripled in the past decade to a record 253,000 hectares (625,000 acres) in 2023, according to the latest report available from the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime. That is about triple the size of New York City.<\/p>\n<p>The government of Venezuela, also a target of the Trump administration\u2019s military operations in the region, decried the sanctions against Petro, calling them \u201cillegal, illegitimate, and neocolonial actions that violate international law and the Charter of the United Nations.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The statement added that the U.S. measures seek to \u201cpromote the internal destabilization in Colombia\u201d and praised Petro\u2019s counter-narcotics strategy.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the U.S. military strikes targeting traffickers accused of funneling drugs to the United States have hit boats the U.S. says have come from Venezuela or taken place in waters off the Venezuelan coast. <\/p>\n<p>Petro has pushed back against the strikes, which have killed at least 43 people since they began early last month, and has repeatedly feuded with Trump this year. <\/p>\n<p>Petro initially rejected U.S. military flights of <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/colombia-immigration-deportation-flights-petro-trump-us-67870e41556c5d8791d22ec6767049fd\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">deported migrants,<\/a> leading Trump to threaten tariffs. The State Department said it would <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gustavo-petro-colombia-visa-trump-disobey-orders-ebca5169a8323ef087b709c5b8dc69b1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revoke Petro\u2019s visa<\/a> when he attended the U.N.
