US President Donald Trump says he does not forget when people “say bad” about him, in a renewed warning to Australia’s ambassador, Kevin Rudd.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week, after a meeting with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the president was asked about old tweets from Mr Rudd, who he appeared not to know.<\/p>\n

“You said bad?” Mr Trump asked the ambassador, who was sitting across the cabinet table from him.<\/p>\n

Mr Rudd, who had previously been scathing of the president in a series of now-deleted social media posts<\/a>, told Mr Trump the tweets were posted before he assumed the role of ambassador.<\/p>\n

“I don’t like you either, and I probably never will,” Mr Trump replied, causing laughter from those assembled.<\/p>\n

At the meeting, former prime minister and now ambassador Kevin Rudd offered an apology to Mr Trump, who said he was forgiven. (ABC News: Tamara Penniket)<\/p>\n

The Australian government said the remark was “tongue in cheek”, insisting the president forgave Mr Rudd afterwards.<\/p>\n

But when asked by a reporter on Friday night, Washington time, whether they had patched up the relationship, Mr Trump’s response indicated that might not be the case.<\/p>\n

“I don’t know anything about him,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I think he said a long time ago something bad.<\/p>\n

“When they say bad about me, I don’t forget.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Following the cabinet table interaction on Monday, Mr Albanese fiercely defended his former Labor colleague, saying he was doing a “fantastic job” and working his “guts out” in Washington.<\/p>\n

Opposition Leader Sussan Ley initially called Mr Rudd’s position “untenable,” but she ended up cooling her criticism as the week progressed, after members of her backbench defended Mr Rudd’s work.<\/p>\n

The White House meeting was the first sit-down between Mr Albanese and Mr Trump, following several phone calls since the president’s re-election.<\/p>\n

The federal government is celebrating the US president’s emphatic backing of AUKUS, saying his statements should kill off speculation.<\/p>\n

While no deal was struck on reduced tariffs, the leaders signed a multi-billion-dollar critical minerals deal to boost the processing and supply of rare earths \u2014 integral to technologies including mobile phones, solar panels and weapons.<\/p>\n

Mr Trump also voiced his strong support for the AUKUS nuclear-powered submarine pact between the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.<\/p>\n

Trump has someone in mind for new US ambassador<\/p>\n

On Friday night, Mr Trump was also asked why he had not yet picked a new US ambassador to Australia, after Caroline Kennedy’s departure in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said he had somebody in mind, but did not indicate who that might be.<\/p>\n

“Your leader [Anthony Albanese] was just here, and he’s a great guy, and I’m going to make sure we have somebody that he likes,” he said<\/p>\n
