A man in his 60s has died at the property of a prominent farmer in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt.<\/p>\n
Emergency services were alerted to a workplace incident at around 12:30pm on Saturday at a grain refinery in Merredin, about 260 kilometres north east of Perth.<\/p>\n
The incident was first believed to have occurred at the Merredin CBH site, but the ABC has confirmed the worker died at the property of prominent WA farmer, John Nicoletti.<\/p>\n
Mr Nicoletti, who had previously been dubbed the “grain king”, told the ABC he was alerted to the incident by a contractor who was building silos on his property.<\/p>\n
Merredin CBH area manager Jerome O’Malley said staff had to redirect emergency services to the site.<\/p>\n
“The ambulance initially rocked up at the [CBH] sample sheds because obviously they heard there’s an incident involving grain \u2026 then we directed from there,” he said.<\/p>\n
Mr O’Malley said Mr Nicoletti’s site consisted of four silos, two of which were currently under construction.<\/p>\n
Worksafe to investigate<\/p>\n
A St John WA spokesperson said two ambulance crews attended the scene near Gamenya Avenue and Gabo Avenue.<\/p>\n
However, a 63-year-old man was confirmed dead when they arrived.<\/p>\n
Worksafe has been advised of the incident and investigators are heading to the scene.<\/p>\n
The exact location of the incident is unclear, with conflicting accounts of where the man was found.<\/p>\n
A report will be prepared for the coroner.<\/p>\n
