{"id":331725,"date":"2025-10-25T14:34:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T14:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/331725\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T14:34:10","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T14:34:10","slug":"charter-school-operations-propose-to-operate-in-25-duval-county-public-schools-starting-in-2027-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/331725\/","title":{"rendered":"Charter school operations propose to operate in 25 Duval County Public Schools, starting in 2027 \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A charter school operation notified Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) of its plans to use spaces in over two dozen district schools for its own use, for free. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Action News Jax got a copy of all 25 letters sent by Mater Academy to DCPS through a public records request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The letters show Mater Academy\u2019s intent to open inside 25 of the district\u2019s schools that are \u201cunderused\/vacant\/surplus district facilities.\u201d It wants to begin classes at the start of the 2027 school year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The letters also show the number of students they plan to have enrolled for each school in the next 5 years &#8211; the total for all 25 schools comes out to over 11,000 students. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Duval County Schools get almost $9,000 per student in state funding. That means Mater Academy could take away nearly 100 million dollars from traditional public schools if its enrollment goals are reached.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">In September, the Florida Department of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/florida-charter-school-expansion-bill-fd99d87f21f745d9009b959287e43b34\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/florida-charter-school-expansion-bill-fd99d87f21f745d9009b959287e43b34\" target=\"_blank\"><b>signed off on an expansion<\/b><\/a> of its charter school rules to allow certain charter schools, known as Schools of Hope, to \u201cco-locate,\u201d or move into, any public school in districts across Florida, for free, that have unused space within their buildings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cEvery public school family and taxpayer should be livid about the takeover of our community assets and our public schools,\u201d said Katie Hathaway, a DCPS parent and school advocate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Hathaway has kids enrolled in the School district. She tells me she\u2019s worried about what this means for public school students. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cTo allow these private charter operators to come into our public schools and use our facilities at no costs is asinine,\u201d said Hathaway. \u201cIt\u2019s stealing resources away from every child in our public education system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Most of the schools listed in the 25 letters are elementary schools. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Of the 25 schools named by Mater Academy, four of them are already closed, and most of them are elementary schools. Of the 21 schools that are still operating, more than 75% of them are located in school districts 4 and 5, which contain Northwest Jacksonville and a good portion of the northside.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cI know that there\u2019s going to be some financial drain,\u201d said DCPS District 4 School Board Member Darryl Willie. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\"><b>[DOWNLOAD: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/b><\/a><b>]<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Willie says he doesn\u2019t think this will help the district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially with where we are in our facilities, planning with what we\u2019re trying to do with consolidations and making sure that every single student has a great option. It really causes extra confusion for our families and parents right now,\u201d said Willie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Darryl Willie says he looks forward to having discussions with his fellow school board members and other state lawmakers about how this new rule could impact public school districts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">We reached out to DCPS for a statement about this, and a spokesperson said: <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cCharter operators have expressed interest in our DCPS campuses, spanning elementary, middle, and high schools.
