Lefty mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani \u2014 who gleefully posed for a photo just with an\u00a0unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0was in tears a week after The Post reported the outrage,\u00a0<\/strong>as he recalled his frightened Muslim aunt in the days after 9\/11 and pledged not to hide his own faith should he win City Hall.<\/p>\n

The Democratic socialist, who has in the past refused to condemn the antisemitic phrase \u201cglobalize the intifada\u201d which is seen as a call for violence against Jews, accused ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his other opponents<\/a> Friday of stoking Islamophobia in a bid to bring down his campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to speak to the memory of my aunt,\u201d Mamdani told the crowd in front of the Islamic Cultural Center of The Bronx, pausing to choke back tears, \u201cwho stopped taking the subway after Sept.11th because she did not feel safe in her hijab.\u201d<\/p>\n

The progressive promised to make it his mission to stand up for NYC\u2019s Muslim community should he be elected as mayor next month.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe dream of every Muslim is simply to be treated as any other New Yorker, and yet for too long we have been told to ask for less than that and to be satisfied with whatever little we receive,\u201d said Mamdani.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo more.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will not change who I am, how I eat, or the faith that I\u2019m proud to call my own,\u201d he added. \u201cBut there is one thing that I will change. I will no longer look for myself in the shadows. I will find myself in the light.\u201d<\/p>\n

The emotional speech came after Mamdani rattled off a series of anti-Islam sentiments made by his political opponents on the campaign trail, including a radio interview this week where\u00a0Cuomo chuckled at the suggestion<\/a>\u00a0from conservative WABC host Sid Rosenberg that Mamdani, who is Muslim, would \u201cbe cheering\u201d if \u201canother 9\/11\u201d happened.<\/p>\n

He also accused GOP mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa of \u201cslandering\u201d him by claiming during Wednesday\u2019s final mayoral debate that the socialist Queens assemblyman supports \u201cglobal jihad.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grinning candidate posed for a photo with Wahhaj and City Councilman Yusef Salaam, and posted it to social media. Days later he downplayed the meeting. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe same imam met with Mayor Bloomberg, met with Mayor De Blasio, campaigned alongside Eric Adams, and the only time it became an issue of national attention was when I met with him,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because of the fact of my faith and because I\u2019m on the precipice of winning this election.\u201d<\/p>\n
