That’s a significant new issue.”

The Australian Human Rights Commission created a national anti-racism framework in 2024 to combat systemic failings, but Mr Sivaraman said it needed more support.

“Politicians need to confront racism and be prepared to call it out and recognise that it’s a systemic issue,”

Mr Sivaraman said.If you or anyone you know needs help:

Lifeline (24-hour crisis line): 13 11 14

Full Stop Australia: 1800 385 578

13YARN: 13 92 76

MensLine Australia: 1300 789 978

He pointed to specific, large increases in interpersonal racism: towards people of Chinese origin during COVID; towards First Peoples during the Voice referendum, and a huge jump in anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism over the last year and a half.

“We’ve got to stop pretending that these are just random or isolated occurrences and recognise that they’re part of a structural problem,” he said.

“If your structures are racist or broken, they allow racism to occur.”

Stream all episodes of I Was Actually There free on ABC iview or watch Tuesdays on ABC TV at 8.00 pm.

Bangladeshi student Muheeb Bin Shafi was at home when his friend called wanting to check out a massive…

[2
164979,4740,164978,164974,164977,102127,50,164976,7207,28520,164975
0":"post-332629","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-news","8":"tag-anti-migration","9":"tag-australia","10":"tag-cronulla","11":"tag-cronulla-riots","12":"tag-i-was-actually-there","13":"tag-march-for-australia","14":"tag-news","15":"tag-nsw-riots","16":"tag-police","17":"tag-riots","18":"tag-sydney-riots
["GET
