KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump<\/a> plans to burnish his reputation as an international dealmaker on Sunday by solidifying a trade agreement with Malaysia and overseeing the signing of an expanded ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand<\/a>, two nations that skirmished along their disputed border earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The accords could be finalized while Trump attends the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations<\/a>, which is being hosted in Kuala Lumpur. It\u2019s the first stop of a three-country swing<\/a> across the continent, with visits to Japan and South Korea<\/a> and a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.<\/a><\/p>\n

The Republican president touched down shortly before 10 a.m. local time and will attend a ceremony marking the agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, which he said he had been proud to broker.<\/p>\n

Trump had threatened to withhold trade agreements from the two countries after five days of combat in July that killed dozens of people and displaced hundreds of thousands. Cambodia and Thailand have competing territorial claims, and violence periodically flares along their border. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s display of economic leverage has been credited with spurring negotiations. A shaky truce<\/a> has persisted since then. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe fact that Trump was holding the tariff card was actually very, very significant,\u201d said Ou Virak, president of Phnom Penh\u2019s Future Forum think tank. \u201cThat\u2019s probably the main reason, if not the only reason, but definitely the main reason why the two sides agreed immediately to the ceasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, he said, \u201cthere\u2019s a ceremony for Trump to be in front of cameras\u201d so he can be \u201cseen as the champion that brings an end to wars and conflicts,\u201d giving him \u201dmore ammunition for his bid for Nobel Peace Prize.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has explicitly campaigned for the honor, continuously adding to a list of conflicts<\/a> that he either helped resolve or claims to have ended. <\/p>\n

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim<\/a> praised the agreement between Thailand and Cambodia during opening remarks at the summit, saying \u201cit reminds us that reconciliation is not concession, but an act of courage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thai foreign ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura told reporters on Saturday that the \u201cjoint declaration\u201d to be signed on Sunday will state that Thailand and Cambodia \u201care committed to renew their relations.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said there has been an agreement to address Thai concerns about landmines and heavy artillery along the border, as well as other issues. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not an end in itself,\u201d Nikorndej said. \u201cWork has just begun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tariffs are in focus on Trump\u2019s trip<\/p>\n

Trump is expected to sit down with Brazilian President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva while he\u2019s at the summit but not Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The U.S. leader is angry with Canada because of a television ad protesting his tariffs, and on his way to the summit, announced on social media he would hike tariffs on Canada<\/a> because of it.<\/p>\n

Another trade war is front and center on Trump\u2019s trip \u2014 this one, with China. Trump told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One that he was optimistic his meeting with Xi could yield progress on a range of issues, including fentanyl trafficking and soybean trade.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have a really good chance of making a very comprehensive deal,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI want our farmers to be taken care of. And he wants things also.\u201d<\/p>\n

Details about Trump\u2019s agreements have been characteristically scarce, even after Trump departed Washington. It remains to be seen whether Trump\u2019s dealmaking addresses longstanding issues or puts them off for another day.<\/p>\n

Trump expressed confidence about the prospect of finalizing trade agreements with Japan and South Korea, two longstanding allies and trading partners, during the trip.<\/p>\n

In Southeast Asia, trade talks appear further along with Malaysia, and a deal is expected to be signed while Trump is in Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have deals with a lot of people and they\u2019re very good deals,\u201d Trump told reporters traveling with him on Air Force One.<\/p>\n

One leader who will be absent from the summit is Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Although he was close with Trump during his first term, the relationship has been more tense lately. Trump caused irritation by boasting that he settled a recent conflict between India and Pakistan<\/a>, and he has increased tariffs on India<\/a> for its purchase of Russian oil.<\/p>\n
