Trump scrambled to deflect toward the end of a press conference with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Malaysia on Sunday. <\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re not great questions today, I must say,\u201d Trump joked.<\/p>\n
The pair met on the first day of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 2025 summit. <\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a lot of boring questions. We\u2019ll see you later, thank you,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
Moments before, Lula encouraged the media to wait until his meeting with Trump concluded before peppering the two world leaders with more questions. <\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to suggest the press continue the interview after the meeting,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have much time, and we don\u2019t want to waste time or lose time talking with journalists. We have a lot to talk about. If you have patience, you\u2019ll know the results of the meeting afterwards.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having noted early on he thought journalists would have good news \u201cafter\u201d they\u2019d convened in private, Brazil\u2019s president seemed eager to get to the meeting with Trump about U.S. tariffs underway. <\/p>\n
Trump\u2019s love of media appearances is well-established. With his rallies known to run upward of three hours, even his most ardent supporters have on occasion bailed before the president was done speaking his piece.<\/p>\n

Lula is not an ardent supporter of the MAGA leader. A left-wing leader who spent several years in jail under his far-right predecessor Jair Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump\u2019s, the Brazilian leader has previously blasted the U.S. president on everything from climate denialism to his stance on the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. <\/p>\n
\u201cNo gringo is going to give orders to this president,\u201d he said earlier in July, responding to Trump\u2019s sweeping \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs against much of the rest of the planet, including a 50% levy on Brazilian imports.<\/p>\n

Those measures formed the basis of the U.S. and Brazilian presidents\u2019 meeting Sunday, with the MAGA leader saying ahead of time he\u2019d be open to negotiating about the levies. <\/p>\n
Trump appeared wary of tension in the room ahead of their talk. Asked by reporters about Bolsonaro, he said \u201cI always liked him\u2026 feel very badly about what happened to him,\u201d before snapping back that it was \u201cnone of your business\u201d whether the former president\u2019s case would be \u201con the agenda today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brazil\u2019s courts convicted Bolsonaro in September of attempting to overthrow the results of the country\u2019s 2022 election. Currently under house arrest, he faces 27 years in prison on charges including an assassination plot against President Lula. He denies those allegations and has vowed to appeal. <\/p>\n
Trump has framed his tariffs on Brazil as retaliation for what he describes as a \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against the former leader, claiming Bolsonaro is \u201cnot guilty of anything, except for having fought for the people.\u201d <\/p>\n
