href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tariffs<\/a> on Canada, Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/mark-carney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Carney<\/a> says the federal government has \u201csole responsibility\u201d for the country\u2019s ongoing trade talks with its southern neighbour.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is the sole responsibility of the government of Canada to have those discussions with the United States, and it\u2019s the best way forward,\u201d he told reporters Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Carney was in Malaysia for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations leaders summit.<\/p>\n<p>His comments came hours after Trump threatened a 10 per cent tariff on top of what was already in place on Canada in response to an ad campaign launched by Ontario, which aired on American television.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday evening, Eastern time, Trump once again criticized Canada <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11492825\/trump-cut-off-trade-talks-canada-tv-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for the airing of an ad<\/a> that features clips of former president Ronald Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not immediately clear yet how or when the new tariff would be implemented or to what products.<\/p>\n<p>The ad was run by the Ontario government on American television networks in the past week and features images of Americans from all walks of life going about their days over swelling music, with clips from Reagan\u2019s 1987 radio address playing.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" saw Reagan speak about \u201cFree and fair trade,\u201d and about how he views the risks of tariffs and protectionism against tariffs the U.S. was imposing at the time on Japanese advertisement<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday night, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute posted on X that the ad \u201cmisrepresents the \u2018Presidential Radio Address to the Nation on Free and Fair Trade\u2019 dated April 25, 1987.\u201d It added Ontario did not receive foundation permission to \u201cuse and edit the remarks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ontario\u2019s ad led to Trump announcing he did not specifically touch on the tariffs on Sunday in Malaysia, the prime minister did touch on his own country\u2019s work on trade with other nations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe respect trade agreements and the rule of law,\u201d Carney told the leaders\u2019 summit. \u201cWe value the exchange of goods, capital and ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Carney told reporters later on Sunday that the federal government remained committed to finding a trade deal with the U.S..<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government of Canada stands ready to build on the progress that we had been making in our negotiations, our discussions with our American counterparts,\u201d Carney said.<\/p>\n<p>Both Carney and Trump will be in close proximity this week, with the leaders set to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in South Korea.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>During his speech to leaders on Sunday, Carney also reiterated his previous comments about needing reliable partners, noting \u201ctransactional bilateral trade,\u201d and what he considered a new era of great power rivalry that is challenging global institutions countries like Canada and Southeast Asian countries have relied on.<\/p>\n<p>He also highlighted his government\u2019s plan to double non-U.S. exports in the next decade and quadruple defence spending in the next four years.<\/p>\n<p>Carney also noted the recent trade agreement with Indonesia, the first with an ASEAN member, and pledged to move quickly on bilateral deals with other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The prime minister\u2019s office
