The charges come as President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-crime-cities-central-park-five-88b8ee178bf22e91ba205b32c458d060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scales up<\/a> federal law enforcement operations around the U.S. to crack down on crime, though <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/violent-crime-homicides-statistics-safety-c28f7291a1e9b8c310b586ba6514222c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rates have gone done<\/a> in recent years in cities including Philadelphia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have permanently removed a drug trafficking organization out of the streets of Philadelphia, and they\u2019re going to stop pouring guns and chemicals and drugs into our communities,\u201d said FBI Director <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/kash-patel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kash Patel<\/a> at a news conference Friday, touting collaboration between federal and local law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p>The group of 33 people were charged with 41 counts related to drug distribution, and the indictment said they maintained control of the area through violence and threats against rivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis takedown is how you safeguard America from coast to coast,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Parts of Trump\u2019s efforts to mobilize federal law enforcement have garnered <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-crime-crackdown-dc-chicago-new-york-d5c658a7350a954ae1ab4bc80c920ac9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blowback<\/a> as national guard troops and armed federal agents have <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-chicago-portland-memphis-trump-arrests-b36199b00e0511e687c10fa83fd838b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">patrolled city streets<\/a>, conducted sweeping immigration enforcement and at times used <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/chicago-ice-protest-broadview-63261a1b5afcb2dbb0bbf5f712e50215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violent tactics<\/a> against protesters.<\/p>\n<p>The main area where the gang operated was essentially \u201cowned\u201d by Jose Antonio Morales Nieves, 45, known as \u201cFlaco,\u201d the indictment says. Other members paid him \u201crent\u201d to sell drugs there.
