It reaches roughly 3am, and my body wakes me up \u2013 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/sleep-faqs\/why-do-i-wake-up-at-3am\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"common enough process\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sleepfoundation.org\/sleep-faqs\/why-do-i-wake-up-at-3am\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"noopener\">common enough process<\/a>, but one which I, for some reason, don\u2019t recover from. <\/p>\n<p>After the disruption, I stay up for hours, only feeling able to sleep when it\u2019s time to get up and go to work. This persists no matter how much shut-eye I do (or don\u2019t) get, how much <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/how-to-wake-up-refreshed_uk_68f202dae4b0f8088dd57dac\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"exercise I do\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"68f202dae4b0f8088dd57dac\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exercise I do<\/a>, or how <a have something called sleep maintenance insomnia. <\/p>\n<p><strong>What is sleep maintenance insomnia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/too-early-to-get-up-too-late-to-get-back-to-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"According to Harvard Health\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/too-early-to-get-up-too-late-to-get-back-to-sleep\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"noopener\">According to Harvard Health<\/a>, the term refers to a lack of sleep that happens not because someone can\u2019t nod off, but because they wake up and can\u2019t fall back asleep. <\/p>\n<p>In America, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-how-to-get-back-to-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"believed to affect\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-how-to-get-back-to-sleep\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"noopener\">believed to affect<\/a> as many as one in five people (and while there doesn\u2019t seem to be much data on the phenomenon in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesleepcharity.org.uk\/information-support\/adults\/sleep-disorders\/insomnia\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"one in three adults\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/thesleepcharity.org.uk\/information-support\/adults\/sleep-disorders\/insomnia\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"noopener\">one in three adults<\/a> here are thought to experience acute insomnia at some point). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/too-early-to-get-up-too-late-to-get-back-to-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Harvard Health added \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/too-early-to-get-up-too-late-to-get-back-to-sleep\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"7\" rel=\"noopener\">Harvard Health added <\/a>that the condition might be especially common in women during midlife. <\/p>\n<p>Health problems, family stresses, depression, and even hot flashes might play a role. <\/p>\n<p>As, they say, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/sleep-duration-hours-by-age_uk_679768ede4b0e33f6ee64cfa\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"can age\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"679768ede4b0e33f6ee64cfa\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can age<\/a>: \u201cas we grow older, the normal sleep cycle becomes shorter, and we spend less time in deep sleep\u201d. <\/p>\n<p><strong>How can I manage sleep maintenance insomnia?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Karen Carlson, a doctor who runs classes focusing on women\u2019s sleep quality at Boston\u2019s Massachusetts General Hospital, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/v\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"told Harvard Health\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"\/v\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"feed\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"9\" rel=\"noopener\">told Harvard Health<\/a> that going to bed really early to \u201cmake up\u201d for missed sleep might not help. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sometimes happens is that women are going to bed early trying to sleep and then they wake up at 3 or 4am \u2013 and they\u2019re not really meant to sleep more than six or seven hours, but they\u2019re in bed early trying, and they awaken early.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>What may help, however, is \u201cclock blocking\u201d, or ignoring any screen which tells you the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-how-to-get-back-to-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Johns Hopkins shared\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/up-in-the-middle-of-the-night-how-to-get-back-to-sleep\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" <\/p>\n<p>So, too, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/worst-mistake-waking-3am_uk_66f15da7e4b0451ba1299ddd\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"can getting up out of bed to do \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68fb752de4b004dff450d278\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"66f15da7e4b0451ba1299ddd\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can getting up out of bed to do <\/a>something screen-free and relatively mindless, like folding laundry after about 20 minutes of being awake \u2015 or, as Johns Hopkins sleep expert Dr Luis F.
