(Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1914:<\/strong> An <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-voices-in-mine-spur-resc\/183611977\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">explosion<\/a> at the Franklin Coal and Coke Co. mine in downstate Royalton (near Carbondale) killed 52 workers. (Chicago Today)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1969:<\/strong> The Chicago production of the <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-hair-scores-roaring-r\/183614510\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">musical \u201cHair\u201d<\/a> opened at the Shubert Theater in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole thing turns into a house party at the finale, with the cast inviting members of the audience to come up on the stage and join them in dancing,\u201d Tribune critic William Leonard wrote. \u201cSorry, we just can\u2019t hate a show like this!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was originally produced by Oak Brook\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2022\/11\/09\/michael-butler-son-of-oak-brook-founder-polo-enthusiast-original-producer-of-musical-hair-dies-at-95\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Butler<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"H3MkWK6Oc2\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1973\/05\/08\/how-the-chicago-tribune-exposed-city-vote-fraud-in-1972-and-won-a-pulitzer-prize\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How the Chicago Tribune exposed city vote fraud in 1972 \u2014 and won a Pulitzer Prize<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>1972:<\/strong> Following the Tribune\u2019s vote fraud investigation, 79 election judges and precinct captains <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-37-indicted-in-vote-fixe\/183615415\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were indicted<\/a>.
