\u201cI feel like I\u2019m not a very chippy player; that\u2019s more Satou. I\u2019m usually the calm one,\u201d Nyara tells me, while Satou describes herself as a \u201csocial butterfly\u201d and Nyara as more of a homebody.<\/p>\n
\u201cNyara, she\u2019ll play the piano at home. I\u2019m the one dragging her out the house,\u201d Satou says. \u201cBut one thing we do have in common is our love for food and traveling.\u201d And clothes. And Burberry\u2019s Goddess perfume.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s clear both players cherish their relationship and channel that energy when building camaraderie with their work sisters. \u201cEven if you tease your sibling, you can\u2019t do that all the time. There is a trust and a foundation that needs to be built in order to be able to do that,\u201d Satou says. The same goes for the locker room.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou go to war with them and you have to build trust. You have to learn how to communicate and really go through these family dynamics even in the locker room,\u201d she explains, advising that conflicts should be handled internally and not taken to the media\u2014at least, until after the season. \u201cYou still have to suit up and you still have to trust each other on the court.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, Satou says, \u201conce it comes to organizations, then I do think that the public power can be used to your strength.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since she studied social sciences and law in college, it was no surprise Satou jumped at the chance to join the league\u2019s Social Justice Council organization during her first year in 2020. Satou is unafraid\u2014no, she thrives on speaking truth to power, whether she\u2019s discussing menstruation education, sustainability in the fashion industry, or mental health resources\u2014all topics that came up naturally within our hour-long call.<\/p>\n
