{"id":33601,"date":"2025-07-02T21:32:12","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T21:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/33601\/"},"modified":"2025-07-02T21:32:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-02T21:32:12","slug":"trump-announces-a-us-trade-deal-with-vietnam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/33601\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump announces a US trade deal with Vietnam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>      CNN<br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm2e19o003w27pcf7vz1yhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Against a ticking clock, President Donald Trump said Wednesday the United States has reached a trade agreement with Vietnam, pulling off the administration\u2019s third significant deal ahead of a self-imposed July 9 deadline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm3bgua000h356mmacvpc69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the state of global trade largely remains in flux.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm2e5lk0002356m44poyj77@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI just made a Trade Deal with Vietnam,\u201d Trump wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/nam11.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Ftruthsocial.com%2F%40realDonaldTrump%2Fposts%2F114784098546698642&amp;data=05%7C02%7Cdavid.goldman%40cnn.com%7C1e8bced1dc1a48fe95ee08ddb975e924%7C0eb48825e8714459bc72d0ecd68f1f39%7C0%7C0%7C638870638381369596%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=ZdXpzJtMd1Zf%2F5Ai%2Fc2xyYfVb4TX0U7gDZ2EeynfNPM%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Truth Social post.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm3cmej000j356mbvp3fqlu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a subsequent post announcing more details, Trump said the United States will charge a 20% tariff for Vietnamese exports into America, and a 40% tariff for \u201ctransshipping.\u201d US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said in a post on X Wednesday afternoon the \u201ctransshipping\u201d tariff means \u201cif another country sells their content through products exported by Vietnam to us \u2014 they\u2019ll get hit with a 40% tariff.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm4g49j00183b6mpjtle1z2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The 20% tariff is double the current minimum tariff rate the US is charging on goods from Vietnam and virtually every other country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm36lm7000b3b6mn9ymeb8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn return, Vietnam will do something that they have never done before, give the United States of America TOTAL ACCESS to their Markets for Trade,\u201d he added. \u201cIn other words, they will \u2018OPEN THEIR MARKET TO THE UNITED STATES,\u2019 meaning that, we will be able to sell our product into Vietnam at ZERO Tariff.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm3bjbc000i3b6mcd1x4bm7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It wasn\u2019t immediately clear if the deal was finalized or whether Vietnam had agreed to what Trump announced. Vietnam\u2019s state-run news outlet, Vi\u1ec7t Nam News, reported that General Secretary T\u00f4 L\u00e2m and Trump spoke on the phone Wednesday to patch up the terms of the deal, which it referred to as a framework. Vietnam\u2019s US embassy did not respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm52hgu001d3b6mq614xnmt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the call, \u201cL\u00e2m proposed that the US soon recognize Vi\u1ec7t Nam as a market economy and lift export restrictions on certain high-tech products,\u201d the outlet reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm38qmw000d3b6mzw3kbdaz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For months, Trump and his administration have been saying countries were lining up to make trade deals with the United States. But, ahead of July 9, when the 90-day pause on \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs ends and levies as high as 50% could go into effect, it\u2019s been mostly crickets. Restoring those historic tariffs risks rocking financial markets and businesses\u2019 plans alike.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm2xnt8000f356mx4lisgbw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tariff rates on Vietnamese goods shipped to the US were set to rise to a minimum of 46% if the rates Trump announced in April held. Tariffs on Vietnam were among the highest he announced.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcman8od00003b6m91lh9c6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The White House has yet to publish any material laying out the details of the deal Trump announced hours Wednesday morning.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcmaqary00043b6mlmlpqfru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019re still putting together the press release,\u201d US Deputy Treasury Secretary Michael Faulkender told CNBC Wednesday afternoon. He said that would \u201cprobably\u201d come out by the end of the trading day Wednesday, which generally refers to 4 p.m. ET. Faulkender didn\u2019t answer whether the 20% tariff would come on top of the already-in-effect 10% tariff on goods from Vietnam or whether 20% would be the new level.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm2mhk400053b6mn8fx5emt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vietnam was the sixth-top source of goods the US imported last year, shipping $137 billion worth of goods. That\u2019s more than double the value of goods exported to the US five years prior, according to US Commerce Department data.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm3cwww000l3b6maulo7nec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, the trade deficit with Vietnam, equal to the value of goods the US exports there minus imports, has risen in tandem. Last year, it was $123 billion, the third-largest trade deficit the US had with any country. Back in 2019 it was $56 billion, the fifth-largest trade deficit with another country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm42vq3000w3b6mea9vv7r3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump has taken particular issue with countries that run large and persistent trade deficits with the US, claiming they\u2019re indicative of unfair trade practices. That helps explain why he sought to impose one of the highest \u201creciprocal\u201d tariff rates on the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm3zn29000t3b6mx3kzxdc8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vietnam has benefited from the higher tariffs Trump imposed on Chinese goods during his first term that former President Joe Biden largely kept in place. Those tariffs caused more companies to move their production to Vietnam, where tariff rates were lower.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm48x7z000z3b6mzn4y1g1x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among the top imports from there are computers and electronics, apparel and accessories and furniture. While China remains the top imported sources of these goods, Vietnam has quickly been catching up.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm4bjm700123b6m0qb6wrfz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shares of companies that have become reliant on Vietnam, including Nike (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/NKE\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NKE<\/a>), Lululemon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/LULU\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LULU<\/a>) and Columbia Sportswear (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/COLM\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">COLM<\/a>), all jumped higher immediately after Trump announced the deal. Nike and Columbia Sportswear held on to their gains, and were up 4.2% and 1.3%, respectively, around 3 p.m. ET. Shares of Lululemon flipped between positive and negative territory Wednesday, but were up 0.7%. VF Corporation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/VFC\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">VFC<\/a>), which owns The North Face and Vans, was up 1.5%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmcm4ehjt00153b6m6mhnq5ss@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The S&amp;P 500 was up 0.38% by mid-afternoon, hitting a new intraday record, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 0.82%.
