Further, Democrats on the Senate&#8217;s Joint Economic Committee provided their own estimate using CBO data and landed on the same number.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This estimate was based on funding cuts added to the bill in the Senate for the Medicaid program, publicly funded health insurance for people with limited income and resources, and the Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as Obamacare. Medicaid provided health care access for more than 78 million people as of this writing, according to the program&#8217;s enrollment data.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The estimates included not only people affected by the budget bill, but also by other policies by the Trump administration, including the end of tax credits for health insurance premiums provided by the ACA.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ml-4 list-disc\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bill may still change, however, which means the estimates of how many people will lose access to health care may change as well.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After the U.S. Senate voted to pass President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;Big Beautiful Bill&#8221; on July 1, 2025, rumors circulated that the amended bill would result in 17 million people losing access to health care. This was due to projected cuts to Medicaid provided for in the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For example, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, posted the claim <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GavinNewsom\/status\/1940109505058250992\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:on X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">on X<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/Jv9hK\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:archived;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">archived<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As of this writing, the post had garnered 3.2 million views and 85,000 likes. Other <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/briantylercohen\/status\/1940117748576879098\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:posts;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">posts<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/briantylercohen\/status\/1940082852559036664\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:on X;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">on X<\/a> and Facebook also spread the claim, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=1279731443508717&amp;set=pb.100044156213474.-2207520000&amp;locale=en_GB\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:one by Sen. Elizabeth Warren;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">one by Sen. Elizabeth Warren<\/a>, a Democrat from Massachusetts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The bill, which could still be amended, provided for about $1 trillion in funding cuts for Medicaid, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/research\/medicaid-and-chip\/senate-reconciliation-amendment-would-cut-hundreds-of-billions-more-from\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:June 30 note;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">June 30 note<\/a> by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities based on data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/publication\/61533\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Congressional Budget Office;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Congressional Budget Office<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Medicaid had more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/medicaid\/program-information\/medicaid-and-chip-enrollment-data\/report-highlights\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:78 million enrollees;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">78 million enrollees<\/a> as of March 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbo.gov\/system\/files\/2025-06\/Wyden-Pallone-Neal_Letter_6-4-25.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:June 16 letter;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">June 16 letter<\/a> to Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon, and Democratic Reps. Frank Pallone and Richard Neal, of New Jersey and Massachusetts, respectively, the CBO estimated that the budget bill as it stood would result in 16 million people becoming uninsured by 2034. This number included 10.9 million people losing Medicaid coverage access to health insurance through the Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as Obamacare, because of the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">After the bill was amended in the Senate, the CBO estimated tit would result in 11.8 million people losing Medicaid and ACA coverage.
