at Texas library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Texas studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/lake-flato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lake Flato Architects<\/a> has created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/libraries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">library<\/a> with a porch-like scheme, featuring mass-timber elements and a designated space for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">children<\/a>, outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/austin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Austin<\/a>, Texas, USA. <\/p>\n<p>Completed in 2024, the 47,000-square-foot (4,365-square-metre) Cedar Park Public Library sits on two tree-filled acres and was the first building constructed in the new 50-acre Bell District, which is a public-private partnership between the City of Cedar Park and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redleaf-properties.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RedLeaf Properties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262746 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lake-flato-austin-library-porch_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x1123.jpg\" alt=\"Porch structure on Texas Library\" width=\"1794\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Lake Flato Architects has designed a library with elements evoking a porch outside of Austin<\/p>\n<p>The free, public library and adjacent Bell Park welcome up to 5,000 visitors per day and serve as a placemaking catalyst for the still-to-come residential and hospitality projects, according to the project team.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakeflato.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Flato Architects<\/a> sought to evoke domestic porches through design and material as a way to emphasise the building as a hospitable one.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262735 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lake-flato-austin-library-porch_dezeen_2364_col_5-852x636.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Flato Texas Library with porch-theme\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1766\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>A cantilever over the entryway highlights the porch theme<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The use of wood, daylight and the arrangement of spaces in the library are meant to evoke the feeling of being on a porch,&#8221; said David Lake, founder and partner of Lake Flato Architects.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Like a porch on a home, the library is a welcoming place for gathering, sharing and connecting both indoors and out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262733 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lake-flato-austin-library-porch_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x639.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Flato Texas Library with porch-theme\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1774\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Local stone was used on parts of the facade<\/p>\n<p>The exterior of the two-story library is crafted from materials \u2013 including Texas limestone, metal panels, glazing and a sculptural, mass timber roof \u2013 selected to withstand the climate while reflecting the texture and colouring of the site.<\/p>\n<p>The library centres around a double-height lobby that features an acoustic wall made from wood reclaimed from the site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262731 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lake-flato-austin-library-porch_dezeen_2364_col_1-852x1141.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Flato Texas Library with porch-theme\" width=\"1766\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It has a central atrium space and social area<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Filled with natural light and framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, the space encourages movement, gathering, and connection, and embodies the library&#8217;s role as &#8216;the community&#8217;s porch&#8217;,&#8221; said Lake Flato associate Ashley Grzywa.<\/p>\n<p>From the threshold lobby, the program spreads out into two wings, placed to accommodate mature trees, capture prevailing breezes and maximize daylight and views of the surrounding landscape.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262734 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lake-flato-austin-library-porch_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1135.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Flato Texas Library with porch-theme\" width=\"1774\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Mass-timber elements were used for the structure<\/p>\n<p>The active northwestern wing of the library includes museum-quality children&#8217;s interactive learning exhibits with plush reading nooks and a play structure. Meanwhile, the southwestern holds maker spaces, classrooms and multipurpose spaces to cater to other library resources.<\/p>\n<p>The upper floor has quiet zones for reading, working on the computer and offices, while the surrounding site is scattered with shading courtyards for community programming.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2025\/05\/08\/us-pavilion-porch-mass-timber-venice-archietcture-biennale\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/sq-us-pavilion-porch-mass-timber-venice-archietcture-biennale_dezeen_2364_col_0-191x191.jpg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"US Pavilion Porch at the Venice Architecture Biennale\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p> Mass timber forms &#8220;contemporary porch&#8221; at US Pavilion at Venice Architecture Biennale\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Natural, healthy materials were prioritized throughout, paired with thoughtful furnishings and art to create an inclusive, enduring environment that reflects the community&#8217;s identity,&#8221; Lake said.<\/p>\n<p>The library incorporates a range of passive and active sustainable strategies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Deep roof overhangs and screened porches provide shade and promote natural ventilation of outdoor spaces,&#8221; Grzywa said. &#8220;The use of mass timber and locally sourced limestone reduces embodied carbon and supports longevity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2262744 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/lake-flato-austin-library-porch_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x1074.jpg\" alt=\"Lake Flato Texas Library with porch-theme\" width=\"1876\" height=\"2364\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>It has a designated space for children<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a high-performance envelope, sensor-controlled lighting and airside energy recovery systems reduce the building&#8217;s operational energy.<\/p>\n<p>Originally founded in San Antonio with an office in Austin, Lake Flato&#8217;s works span scales and the state of Texas.
