But days before Halloween, a hunt was on for one of the only true predators of mosquitoes: the bats.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Local perspective:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Along a trail in Peoria, inside, and sometimes outside, bats can be seen flying around. They&#8217;re nature&#8217;s most misunderstood flying mammal, but they\u2019re a big help right now when we need them most.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The Halloween decorations aren\u2019t the spookiest part of Jay Soni\u2019s home in Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Thousands of bats. It\u2019s fun, especially now with Halloween,&#8221; Soni said. When asked if he knew what it would be like when he moved there, he replied, &#8220;No, no. We had no idea.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Soni lives next to the Phoenix Bat Cave.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They come every evening,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">This cave, which is really just a Maricopa County Flood Control District canal, has been known for decades as one of the best bat viewing sites in the country.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Big picture view:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Around 5,000 to 10,0000 Mexican free-tailed bats live in the canal near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/E+Camelback+Rd+%26+N+40th+St,+Phoenix,+AZ+85018\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x872b0cfc92f4009b:0x7055139860d6e2a1?sa=X&amp;ved=1t:242&amp;ictx=111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Camelback and 40th Street<\/strong><\/a>. So many of them, the National Weather Service picked them up on radar last year.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Most have migrated to Mexico for the winter, but a few stuck around for what\u2019s been dubbed &#8220;Bat Week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They\u2019re not something to be afraid of,&#8221; said Angie McIntire of the Arizona Game and Fish Department.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The timing makes sense; Halloween and bats go together.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Their little faces are all just very different,&#8221; McIntire said. &#8220;They\u2019re not necessarily what a person expects. A lot of bats have big ears or big eyes, and so a lot of times just that alone is kind of fascinating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"KSAZ\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">But there\u2019s another reason to highlight our upside-down friends: mosquitoes.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Some of them eat beetles, others are moth specialists, but certainly there are smaller species of bats that go after those mosquitoes and midges and things like that,&#8221; McIntire explained.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The ones in the Phoenix Bat Cave likely prefer larger prey, so the search tracked down the species that targets bloodsuckers. The mosquito population exploded after a wet start to October.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Up a trail in North Peoria, there\u2019s a grate on an abandoned mine. A spotlight welded onto the spot is the only true marker of what hangs below. Inside are several dozen California leaf-nosed bats.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">McIntire said that while the bats are amazing, they are often misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They\u2019re really inspiring,&#8221; she said. &#8220;They\u2019re just so interesting, they\u2019re beautiful. They\u2019re hard to know.
