Then, in a very unusual sequence, Daulton Varsho thought he walked when he really took a called strike \u2014 on a pitch well above the zone and on a late call from home plate umpire Mark Wegner. Bichette, thinking Varsho walked, made his way to second, but Tyler Glasnow quickly threw the ball to Freddie Freeman to pick off Bichette.<\/p>\n

Varsho walked three pitches later. Alejandro Kirk then singled to a line drive to right field before Addison Barger struck out. Ernie Clement lined out to center field to cap the frame.<\/p>\n

The pickoff saved the Dodgers a run. Glasnow eventually did walk Varsho, then gave up a single to Alejandro Kirk, but got the two guys after that to escape the jam<\/p>\n

He could be the leader of the most expensive collection of talent in baseball history. He could be the two-time World Series champion manager. He could be part of a dynasty.<\/p>\n

Don Mattingly<\/a> said he never viewed his departure<\/a> from the Dodgers<\/a> in that context, however.<\/p>\n

And when he returns to Dodger Stadium this week as the bench coach of the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>, he doesn\u2019t expect to feel anything he wouldn\u2019t feel in a World Series game played at any other stadium.<\/p>\n

TORONTO\u00a0\u2014\u00a0George Springer has become a hero in Toronto, where his five-year tenure with the team culminated in his go-ahead home run in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series last week.<\/p>\n

But in Los Angeles, the veteran slugger remains a villain for his role on the 2017 Houston Astros team that beat the Dodgers in that year\u2019s World Series \u2014 and was later found to have been stealing signs with their trash-can-banging system<\/a> that year.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a place to catch the Dodgers game, there\u2019s a pizza place not too far from Dodger Stadium called LaSorted\u2019s<\/a>. If you know, you know. If you don\u2019t know, this probably is not your place.<\/p>\n

The walls are almost entirely covered in Dodgers memorabilia: yearbooks, programs, newspapers, magazine covers, advertisements, record albums, even a thermometer reading \u201c1988 World Champions,\u201d with portraits of Vin Scully, Don Drysdale and Ross Porter.<\/p>\n

The menu includes a pizza called Mookie, with three cheeses, garlic, mushrooms, and mushroom cream.<\/p>\n

Who would have guessed that in a starting rotation of giants and alphas<\/a>, the most important pitcher would be the diminutive 27-year old with the mischievous smile who plays the role of everyone\u2019s little brother?<\/p>\n

From a distance, Yoshinobu Yamamoto<\/a> doesn\u2019t look like someone who figures to contend in the coming years to be the best pitcher in the world.<\/p>\n

He stands only 5-foot-10. He\u2019s not mean in the way frontline starters sometimes are. He\u2019s extremely considerate of others<\/a>, even people who offer minimal, if any, transactional value \u2014 or more precisely, his focus and confidence in his work don\u2019t blind him to their sensitivities.<\/p>\n

TORONTO\u00a0\u2014\u00a0There might be no greater reminder of how far the Dodgers<\/a> have come than the opposing pitcher on Monday. When the World Series returns to Dodger Stadium for Game 3, the starting pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays is scheduled to be Max Scherzer<\/a>. <\/p>\n

You may remember his brief tenure with the Dodgers four years ago<\/a>, which ended with an elimination game in which Scherzer said he could not pitch<\/a>. The Dodgers lost<\/a>, the last domino in a cascade triggered by a front office that miscast its humans as widgets in a search for even the tiniest of edges.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t just take my word for it. This was the word<\/a> from Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martinez at the time: \u201cDodgers analytics dept really misused probably the best rotation in all of baseball. \u2026They need to figure out a way to let starters be who they really are and let them pitch how they are used to.\u201d<\/p>\n

After missing the final three weeks of the regular season with a hairline fracture in his right hand, the Dodgers<\/a>\u2019 All-Star catcher sat out the National League wild-card series, then came off the bench late in the first two games against the Phillies in the division series.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s been making up for that lost time ever since.<\/p>\n
