South Dallas celebrated a new era of creative excellence this weekend as St. Philip\u2019s School and Community Center officially opened the Moody Performing and Fine Arts Center, a state-of-the-art facility designed to nurture the next generation of artists, innovators, and community leaders.<\/p>\n
The celebration on October 18 drew alumni, families, and cultural leaders \u2014 including Dallas native and global icon Erykah Badu \u2014 back to the campus that has long been a foundation for faith, education, and service.<\/p>\n

Dallas Weekly was on the scene to capture the evening\u2019s powerful reflections, performances, and the shared joy of a community investing in its artistic future.<\/p>\n
A Legacy Reimagined<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cEducation means so very much to me and the way that children are taught,\u201d said Erykah Badu, who attended St. Philip\u2019s as a child. \u201cThey are like little lumps of clay. You are molding who they are and who you invite around them are molding who they are. I am very touched for this new beginning.\u201d<\/p>\n Her words captured the spirit of the night \u2014 one rooted in faith, creativity, and community.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is an indoor playground for our community, a gift to South Dallas,\u201d said Dr. Terry J. Flowers, Headmaster and Pastor of St. Philip\u2019s. \u201cOur students and community members now have a space worthy of their talent, a place to practice, perform, and find their voices.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Endless Possibilities for the Next Generation<\/strong><\/p>\n For alumni, the new center represents far more than a building \u2014 it\u2019s the continuation of a legacy that molded their confidence and purpose.<\/p>\n \u201cThe possibilities that I see for the students here at St. Philip\u2019s are endless,\u201d said Zuri Williams (Class of 2014). \u201cWith new facilities like the recording studio and art spaces, they\u2019ll gain skills that will shape their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Taryn Love, daughter of Dr. Flowers and a proud alumna, echoed that sentiment:<\/p>\n \u201cSt. Philip\u2019s started the foundation of who I am today \u2014 building my identity, my confidence, and my faith. With the Moody Center, my children and their classmates will have even more opportunities to dance, design, and dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Other graduates reflected on the community values instilled in them.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen it comes to making sure that the people who look like you are taken care of, St. Philip\u2019s built that sense of community within me,\u201d said Malcolm Harrod (Class of 2014), now a commercial photographer. \u201cIt taught me that it takes a village to raise a child \u2014 and this new center is part of that village.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n Building Pathways Through Art<\/strong><\/p>\n The new facility \u2014 made possible by the generosity of St. Philip\u2019s donors and community partners \u2014 features spaces for music, theatre, dance, and visual arts, all designed to provide access to professional-level tools and mentorship.<\/p>\n Partnerships announced during the event include collaborations with Dallas Black Dance Theatre and DOC Cares, led by Tracy \u201cThe D.O.C.\u201d Curry, whose Dreams Experience Academy will introduce students to careers in media, entertainment, and technology.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re pouring into young people in the same place that once poured into my own children,\u201d said Curry.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n The celebration also showcased installations by local artists Ebony Lewis, Malcolm Harrod, Juan Hernandez, and Johnice Parker, emphasizing the center\u2019s role as both a creative hub and a cultural bridge.<\/p>\n Faith, Art, and the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n As performances by alumni and Carmen Rodgers brought the evening to a close, the message was clear: the Moody Performing and Fine Arts Center is more than a facility \u2014 it\u2019s a testament to faith, perseverance, and imagination.<\/p>\n \u201cThe future is bright,\u201d said Harrod. \u201cThere\u2019s a continuous pouring into these students \u2014 intellectually and culturally \u2014 and St. Philip\u2019s has proven that the sky is the limit.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n
