(Chester Gabrysiak\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1893: <\/strong>\u201cThe World\u2019s Fair Mayor\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-harrison-is-killed-chic\/183800230\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Carter H. Harrison<\/a>, was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/1988\/10\/09\/he-deserved-to-be-shot-said-the-mayors-assassin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">shot and killed<\/a>\u00a0at point blank range at his home by Patrick Eugue Prendergast, who was disappointed that he was not named corporation counsel. Prendergast was later hanged for the crime.<\/p>\n<p>Harrison, whose son Carter H. Harrison Jr. served five terms as Chicago mayor, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2025\/02\/15\/chicago-history-february-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Anton Cermak<\/a>\u00a0are the only Chicago mayors who have been assassinated.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"President Franklin D. (Chicago Tribune archive)<\/p>\n<p><strong>1944:<\/strong> Weeks before he was elected to a <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-franklin-d-roosevelt-re\/153753811\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fourth term<\/a> (the 22nd Amendment that instituted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/exhibits\/running-for-office\/larger-image.php?image=44.1&amp;TB_iframe=true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two-term limit<\/a> was not ratified until 1951), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/documents\/address-soldiers-field-chicago-illinois\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Franklin D. (Scott Strazzante\/Chicago Tribune)<\/p>\n<p><strong>2004:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/chicagotribune.newspapers.com\/article\/chicago-tribune-trump-takes-chicago-chi\/183810472\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a>, whose namesake building would be constructed on the site, watched as demolition began on the Chicago Sun-Times building along the Chicago River.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in 2009, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyscrapercenter.com\/building\/trump-international-hotel-tower\/203\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump International Hotel &amp; Tower<\/a> is the second-tallest building in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"President Donald J. Speaking at the annual gathering of the International Association of Chiefs of Police at McCormick Place, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/10\/28\/trump-made-his-first-visit-to-chicago-as-president-here-is-what-happened\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Trump slammed Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson<\/a> in front of his peers and criticized the type of federal order the city was under to reform the CPD. Trump also called Chicago \u201cthe worst sanctuary city in America\u201d and cited the refusal of the city\u2019s Police Department under Johnson to detain people in the country illegally for immigration enforcement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" lazyautosizes lazyload\" alt=\"State Rep. Luis Arroyo of Chicago. A longtime Democrat, Arroyo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/11\/01\/rep-luis-arroyo-resigns-after-being-charged-with-bribery\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2019\/11\/01\/rep-luis-arroyo-resigns-after-being-charged-with-bribery\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">resigned his seat<\/a> shortly after he was arrested on charges that he took bribes from politically connected business owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/10\/11\/you-added-another-star-to-chicagos-walk-of-shame-berrios-son-in-law-gets-5-12-years-in-prison-in-bribery-case-involving-two-state-legislators\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2023\/10\/11\/you-added-another-star-to-chicagos-walk-of-shame-berrios-son-in-law-gets-5-12-years-in-prison-in-bribery-case-involving-two-state-legislators\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Weiss<\/a> in exchange for help promoting legislation beneficial to Weiss\u2019 company, Collage LLC, which specialized in sweepstakes gaming machines.<\/p>\n<p>Arroyo also admitted he enlisted the help of then-state\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/03\/06\/ex-state-sen-terry-link-gets-probation-for-campaign-cash-tax-conviction\/\" data-mrf-link=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/2024\/03\/06\/ex-state-sen-terry-link-gets-probation-for-campaign-cash-tax-conviction\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Terry Link<\/a>, arranging for Weiss to pay Link bribes to help push the legislation in the General Assembly. At the time, Link, a Vernon Hills Democrat, was secretly cooperating with the FBI.
