The Twilight Sad<\/a> have marked their return with the brooding and intense single \u2018Waiting For The Phone Call\u2019 \u2013 featuring The Cure<\/a>\u2018s Robert Smith<\/a> \u2013 as well as announcing a UK and European headline tour for 2026.<\/p>\n

The Scottish noise rockers, now made up of just frontman James Graham and guitarist Andy MacFarlane, have long been in The Cure\u2019s orbit having supported them on a succession of world tours, and with Smith famously covering the band\u2019s own \u2018There\u2019s A Girl In The Corner\u2019<\/a>\u00a0before they would later return the favour with a rendition of \u2018M\u2019<\/a>. They\u2019ll be joining The Cure again for a run of their huge UK and European outdoor dates<\/a> next summer.<\/p>\n

In 2016, Smith also hailed them as \u201cthe best band playing the best songs<\/a> \u2013 consistently brilliant, emotional, intense, inspiring, entertaining\u201d. Now, he\u2019s jumped on the band\u2019s long-awaited comeback track \u2013 described as \u201can autobiographical epic detailing a phone call you never want to arrive\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019Waiting For The Phone Call\u2019 is about grief, love and mental illness,\u201d said Graham. \u201cThese things took over my life and I became ill. I lost the person most important to me in one of the cruellest ways. I\u2019ve always used writing as a method of processing and coping with my emotions. My emotions became a problem and I couldn\u2019t control them, writing music with Andy\u2026 especially the past seven years had been both the escape and the opportunity to process and try and make sense of life.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve all been waiting on a phone call that can change our lives at some point. This unfortunately focuses on a phone call that you never want to have.\u201d<\/p>\n

This marks the band\u2019s first new material since 2019\u2019s acclaimed \u2018It Won\/t Be Like This All The Time<\/a>\u2019, with news of a follow-up record expected in the months ahead. Speaking to NME about their relationship with Robert Smith back in 2018<\/a>, MacFarlane said: \u201cHe\u2019s helped us in so many ways. He\u2019s basically given us a whole new platform, and it\u2019s only because he\u2019s a fan of the band. He\u2019s the most generous person ever. He\u2019s so good to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham added: \u201cMost people like that would just play the gig and fuck off, but Robert really gives a fuck about the music he loves. If you\u2019d told us five years ago that we\u2019d become friends with Robert Smith to just go up to him and slag him and talk shite to him \u2013 it\u2019s mind-blowing. He\u2019s just a nice guy who wants people to do the best that he can.\u201d<\/p>\n

Renowned for their blistering live shows<\/a>, the band hit immediate cult status when they arrived with the universally acclaimed and intense \u2018Fourteen Autumns And Fifteen Winters\u2019 in 2007, before growing in indie circles with \u2018Forget The Night Ahead\u2019<\/a> in 2009, 2012\u2019s \u2018No One Can Ever Know\u2019 <\/a>and the success of \u2018Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants To Leave\u2019 in 2014 before a five year wait for \u2018It Won\/t Be Like This All The Time\u2019.<\/p>\n

In a four-star review of \u2018It Won\/t Be Like This All The Time\u2019, NME concluded<\/a>: \u201cRather than being owned by their demons, The Twilight Sad have created an 11-track exorcism to master them.
