But for Detroit Red Wings fans the question is what happens after the game. Which Griffins player boards a plane to join the NHL team on its Western road trip?

After demoting Michael Brandsegg Nygard Monday, the Red Wings are expecting to call up a player from Grand Rapids after the game.

The best guess is Carter Mazur who beefed up to 200 pounds this offseason and has scored four goals and produced six points in the Griffins’ undefeated season launch. He’s somewhat a sentimental fans favorite as well because he’s a Michigan native who suffered a serious injury in his second shift after being called up last season.

Nate Danielson is also a possibility because an injury prevented him from making the team in training camp. But he’s only played one AHL game since being cleared to play. It may be too soon for him. John Leonard, signed in the summer after scoring 44 goals in the AHL, also seems like a possibility. GM Steve Yzerman signed him to a one-way contract and he has scored five goals in the Griffins’ past three games. He’s 27.

Red Wings In Case You Missed It

The Detroit Red Wings returned Michael Brandsegg-Nygard to Grand Rapids before the start of the road trip.

Defenseman Erik Gustafsson is making the best of a challenging situation with his attitude about playing in Grand Rapids

Bob Duff writes about Glenn Hall’s memories about playing with the Detroit Red Wings

Red Wings Extra

Coach Todd McLellan’s Red Wings (6-3) start this five-game Western Conference road trip with the NHL’s 10th-best record. What’s the team’s chance of coming home with a winning record for this trip? Thus far, the team has played impressively at home and horrendous on the road. Tonight’s opponent, the St. Louis Blues (3-5-1), sit 30th overall and the San Jose Sharks(2-5-2) are 31st. The Los Angeles Kings (4-3-3), Anaheim Ducks (4-3-1) and Vegas Golden Knights (5-1-3) have winning records. Only the Golden Knights have a better record. Given their recent history, 3-2 would probably be considered a good trip for the Detroit squad.

Hockey Now Network

Colorado: Eagles give AHL player Tristen Nielsen a two-year NHL contract. Colorado Avalanche.

Florida: The Panthers are dealing with mounting insures and Brad Marchand’s absence due to family reasons. Florida Panthers.

New Jersey: New details emerge on goalie Jacob Markstrom’s contract negotiations. New Jersey Devils.

Philadelphia: William James looks at who the Flyers’ next AHL call-up should be. Philadelphia Flyers.

Pittsburgh: Penguins’ point streak is at six games now.
